Initiator and chief developer Linus Torvalds has released the first release candidate for the upcoming system kernel Linux 6.0. In particular, numerous optimizations and driver packages for AMD GPUs are incorporated into the next operating system kernel. The Release Candidate 1 (RC-1) offers more than 13,000 changes in total.

Optimizations target AMD GPUs

< p class="p text-width">On the Linux kernel 5.19, which includes fixes against the CPU vulnerabilities RETBleed, which can exploit the Specter and Specter-V2 vulnerabilities discovered in AMD and Intel processors that are still widespread in 2017, and due to a misstep by Intel at the GPU firmware required a total of eight release candidates, Linux 6.0-RC1 has now been officially released. The final operating system kernel will then probably be released between October 2nd and 9th and will contain numerous hardware definitions for AMD GPUs.

As Linus Torvalds has now officially announced, you know the first release candidate of Linux 6.0 has the following key data:

Linux 6.0-RC1

  • 800+ merge commits
  • 13,000+ files changed
  • 1,280,000+ insertions
  • 341,000+ deletions

In total, more than 1,700 developers were involved in the improvements that have been incorporated into Linux 6.0-RC1 so far, such as Torvalds further elaborates.

And, once again, this is one of those releases where you should not look at the diffstat too closely, because more than half of it is yet another AMD GPU register dump. And the Habanalabs Gaudi2 people want to play in that space too, but they don't reach quite the same lofty results that the AMD GPU people have become so famous for. I'm sure it's just a matter of time.

About 60 percent of the changes are new and updated drivers for better hardware support, but there are also architectural improvements to the file system and various tools, as well as minor optimizations intended to provide a performance boost. However, some Chinese developers call the kernel Linux 5.20, which is not the official name.

Oh, and after I had already decided to call this kernel 6.0, a few Chinese developers piped up and pointed out that 5.20 is a more wholesome version of the Western 4.20 internet-famous number.

So if you want to call this Linux 5.20, go right ahead. But whatever you call it, please help test this, so that we can get it all in shape for the final release (hopefully early October).

Der first release candidate of Linux 6.0, which is not suitable for productive systems, can be downloaded and tried out directly from kernel.org. The stable versions are also available for download on ComputerBase.
