Xiaomi has introduced the Mix Fold 2, a particularly thin foldable smartphone that will initially be launched in China. The smartphone competes with devices like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4, but is almost half a centimeter thinner. The equipment is at the absolute top level.

The Mix Fold 2 measures 161.6 × 73.9 × 11.2 mm when closed and thus occupies a larger area than the recently introduced Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 (hands-on), which also belongs to the vertically foldable category smartphones that can be opened to form a small tablet. In return, the Xiaomi smartphone is noticeably thinner at 11.2 mm, while Samsung is 15.8 mm closed. When opened, the two halves of the Mix Fold 2 measure just 5.4 mm in depth on the outside. With the weight of 262 g (Xiaomi) to 263 g (Samsung) there is practically parity.

Xiaomi explains that the thin design is achieved, among other things, by optimizing the hinge and the displays. The “Micro Waterdrop Hinge” uses a particularly small bending radius and smaller rotating components, the screens in turn use particularly thin panels that do not require soldering points and classic polarizers, but instead use an extremely thin color filter.

8.02″ and 6.56″ AMOLED displays

The inner AMOLED panel (LTPO 2.0) extends over 8.02 inches (Samsung: 7.6 inches), offers 2,160 × 1,914 pixels, is supposed to achieve 1,000 cd/m², can control the refresh rate between 1 and 120 Hz and supports Dolby Vision and HDR10+. Like Samsung, Xiaomi uses Schott Ultra Thin Glass (UTG) as a protective coating. The outer AMOLED panel offers the same key data, but at 6.56 inches with 2,520 × 1,080 pixels it has an aspect ratio of 21:9 and is protected by Gorilla Glass Victus.

Camera from Leica cooperation

As with the Xiaomi 12S Ultra, the cameras are based on a cooperation with Leica. The primary camera uses the well-known Sony IMX766 as a sensor, which is set to 1/1.56" to 50 MP natively or an output of 12.5 MP after pixel binning. Additional sensors with 13 MP and 8 MP cover ultra wide angle (15 mm) and telephoto (45 mm). The front camera is 20 MP, but there is no inner camera.

Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 and up to 1TB storage

As with all current flagships, the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 provides propulsion, which thanks to TSMC's N4 production works up to 30 percent more efficiently than the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 from Samsung's production (4LPE) and is also equipped with a faster CPU and GPU. Configurations with 12 GB LPDDR5 RAM and 256 GB, 512 GB or 1 TB storage (UFS 3.1) are offered by Xiaomi. At 4,500 mAh, the battery is similar in size to Samsung's (4,400 mAh), but can be charged much faster with a maximum of 67 watts. Unlike the Galaxy Z Fold 4, however, wireless charging is not on board.

In terms of software, Xiaomi, like Samsung, relies on Android 12L, which Google has optimized for smartphones with large and foldable displays. Xiaomi itself has adapted its own apps such as the calendar, file explorer, notes app and others for the foldable screen and integrated new gestures for split-screen mode, floating windows and multitasking in general.
