Samsung wants to hit the German market this year with its fourth-generation foldable smartphones and increase the number of devices sold by almost a factor of three. The manufacturer forecasts sales of 500,000 devices in Germany for 2022. In this country, Samsung dominates the foldable segment.

The Galaxy Z Fold 4 (Hands-on) and the Galaxy Z Flip 4 (Hands-on) are designed to help Samsung make a big leap forward in the foldable smartphone segment this year. Even before yesterday's announcement of the new devices, the manufacturer gave a rare insight into its sales figures for the German market and also gave a forecast for this year's development.

Samsung has a market share of over 99 percent

Half a million foldable smartphones are to be sold in Germany this year. The statement is practically equivalent to the fact that Samsung wants to sell 500,000 devices this year, because the manufacturer holds a market share of over 99 percent in the foldable segment in this country, as has been officially confirmed. This in turn shows how few foldable smartphones Motorola with the Razr and Huawei with the Mate Xs have to have sold in Germany in order to achieve a combined market share of less than 1 percent. The Oppo Find N is not yet available in this country. Samsung practically holds a foldable monopoly in Germany.

The numbers expected for this year would correspond to a striking increase in sales of almost 280 percent compared to last year, because according to Samsung, a total of 180,000 foldable smartphones were sold in Germany in 2021. Globally, the manufacturer says a total of 10 million devices will be sold by 2021, and 30 million foldable smartphones per year are expected by 2024.

Smartphones over 800 euros increasingly popular

The fact that this goal can be achieved in Germany is underlined by current figures from HEMIX (Home Electronics Market Index Germany) and from GFK (Society for Consumer Research). While sales of consumer electronics generally declined 22 percent during a period of inflation and high cost of living in May, sales of headphones, smartphones and wearables were up 22 percent, 4.5 percent and 1.7 percent, respectively.

In addition, the premium segment of smartphones over 800 euros, in which the Galaxy Z Fold and the Galaxy Z Flip are also located, has grown strongly and currently accounts for 57.1 percent of the entire market in Germany, after 52 in 2021. 2 percent, 37.2 percent in 2020, 35.7 percent in 2019, 34.7 percent in 2018 and only 21 percent in 2017. More and more users are buying devices in the price range from or above 800 euros.

The Galaxy Z Fold is primarily bought by men

< p class="p text-width">Samsung also gave an insight into the percentage distribution of Galaxy Z Fold and Galaxy Z Flip among German buyers. According to this, the Galaxy Z Fold is particularly popular with men with a share of 74 to 26 percent, while the Galaxy Z Flip tends to be a “women’s smartphone” and accounts for almost half of the devices sold there with 48 percent Samsung.
