Looking ahead: expectations of Apple's September event

We are approaching that time of year again: the new iPhone is coming! And where will the new iPhone be announced? At a new iPhone event of course! This year, Apple is likely to unveil the latest models at the iPhone 14 event in September, but more announcements are expected. Not only new products, but also more clarity about the release date of iOS 16 and perhaps a big surprise. We show you what Apple has in store in this preview of the iPhone 14 event this September.

iPhone 14 event date: when is it?
At the moment, Apple has not officially announced the September event of 2022, but that the event will come is almost certain. There have been several clues, and for the past 10 years, Apple has held an event every September. The date of the iPhone 14 event is therefore not yet known, although we can take a guess. The most logical date is September 13 or 14, although Apple can theoretically hold the event a week earlier. We expect the liberating word at the earliest in late August or early September, when Apple officially announces the event.

When is the announcement of the iPhone 14? You may be wondering when Apple will unveil the latest iPhone so you can factor that into your next iPhone purchase. Based on previous years, it is already possible to make a good estimate of when the next iPhone event will be and what the possible date is.

iPhone 14 event expectations in brief

These are the expectations for the September 2022 event in brief, with the most important and likely announcements:

  • Four new iPhones: iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Max, iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max
  • Three new Apple Watches: Apple Watch Series 8, Apple Watch SE 2022 and a new Apple Watch Pro
  • AirPods Pro 2: New Generation of Sporty Earbuds
  • Software Updates: Release Date Announced iOS 16, iPadOS 16, watchOS 9, tvOS 16, and macOS Ventura
  • Possibly two new ones iPads: iPad Pro 2022 and iPad 2022

These are the announcements we expect anyway, although of course nothing is 100% certain yet. Apple has more products in development that will be announced during the event, but you can read more about that later in this preview.

iPhone 14 series: almost certainly< /h2>

The iPhone 14 series will be the main announcement of the event and will probably not be discussed until the end of the presentation. As in previous years, Apple has four models to reveal, although there is a real newcomer among them. Keep in mind that the iPhone 14 name isn't official yet, but if we follow the pattern of recent years, that's the logical name Apple will give the new models.

iPhone 14 – 6.1-inch

The iPhone 14 will be the new standard model with a 6.1-inch screen. This is the successor to the regular iPhone 13 and will probably be released again in a range of new colors. In recent months, few rumors of improvements in this model have surfaced as most sources focus on the bigger improvements of the iPhone 14 Pro. In any case, we expect improvements to the cameras (including the front camera) and some minor performance improvements, even though this model probably uses the same A15 chip.

The iPhone 14 is expected in the fall of 2022. What can we already say about this new iPhone? There are already several rumors and expectations about the iPhone 14 that we have brought together here.

iPhone 14 Max – 6.7″

This year no iPhone 14 mini, but an iPhone 14 Max. In recent years, the mini-device did not sell as well as hoped, while the larger 6.7-inch devices sold like hot cakes. Apple therefore seems to have chosen to release a larger device without pro functions, i.e. the iPhone 14 Max. This is therefore the same model as the regular iPhone 14, but with a larger 6.7-inch screen. That makes the display the same size as that of the iPhone 14 Pro Max. Apple has done this in the past with the Plus models (for example the iPhone 6 Plus), although they also had some differences in the camera, such as a double lens. So far there are no indications that the iPhone 14 Max will have additional features compared to the iPhone 14, besides the larger display.

iPhone 14 Pro – 6.1-inch

The Pro models of the iPhone, it seems, will be the devices with the most improvements. The iPhone 14 Pro will once again have a 6.1-inch display, but something will change. The notch (the notch at the top of the screen) will disappear and, according to sources, gives way to a pill-shaped and round ‘hole’ in the screen, where the camera and sensors in Face ID are incorporated. The display will also have an always-on mode, sources say. Apple is also going to make a lot of changes to the camera, including a better front camera and a wide-angle lens on the back with 48 megapixels.

The iPhone 14 Pro is the top device that Apple will release later this year. There have already been some rumors about the iPhone 14 Pro. In this article you can read everything we already know about the iPhone 14 Pro.

iPhone 14 Pro Max – 6.7″

Like the iPhone 14 Pro, the iPhone 14 Pro Max will likely get an always-on display, improved 48-megapixel camera, and more. But then everything in a bigger jacket. We have become quite accustomed to the 6.7-inch format, although it will still be far too large for many. But the Max devices have now proven themselves and are indispensable in the line-up. The iPhone 14 Pro Max is expected to have the longest battery life of all models, as has been the case in recent years.

Apple Watch Series 8: almost certainly

The Apple Watch Series 8 will probably not differ much in appearance from its predecessor, the Apple Watch Series 7. Apple probably uses the same screen with the same dimensions on the new model and the case also retains the design of recent years. So no brand new design yet, but then what? It seems that the Apple Watch Series 8 will get a body thermometer, which will warn you if you have a fever or a fever. A new chip is also coming in and we think Apple will release the model in a few new colors. The Apple Watch Series 8 will therefore not be a huge update and will mainly appeal to people who now have an older model, such as an Apple Watch Series 4.

Apple Watch SE 2022: almost certain

The Apple Watch SE will receive a successor two years later: the Apple Watch SE 2022. This new model will probably get the latest chip and some sensors that were still missing in the current version, such as the sensor for making an EKG. Apple will probably keep the same screen sizes, so 40mm and 44mm, making this model a fraction smaller than the new Apple Watch Series 8. It is not clear whether it will also include always-on, but we don't think so.

Everything points to us getting a new Apple Watch SE in 2022. The Apple Watch SE 2022 is the successor to the previous generation and will probably get some minor improvements.

Apple Watch Pro: Very High Opportunity

A new model in the Apple Watch lineup may be the Apple Watch Pro (or Apple Watch Rugged or Apple Watch Explorer Edition, whatever Apple will call it). What we know in any case is that this model is mainly intended for active outdoor athletes and will receive a sturdier housing, possibly made of titanium. In addition, there are rumors about a larger screen, of perhaps 50 mm. For example, Apple could opt for a more rectangular screen. This allows the watch to show more information on watch faces and during workouts. The price would be a lot higher, especially because of the larger screen and the titanium housing. Apple could also replace the existing Apple Watch Edition with this model. We are therefore not sure whether this model is seen as a separate Apple Watch (such as the Apple Watch SE) or more as a kind of variant of the Apple Watch Series 8 (such as the Apple Watch Edition and Apple Watch Nike).

Release data software updates: almost certain

Apple will also be highlighting the software updates that are now betas at the event: iOS 16, iPadOS 16, watchOS 9, tvOS 16, and macOS Ventura. We expect Apple to announce the release date of the first four during the event. The date of macOS Ventura may not come until later and we probably won't hear during the September event. Incidentally, there are also reports that iPadOS 16 has been delayed and will be released at the same time as macOS Ventura. If so, we wouldn't be surprised if Apple just announced that the iPad update will be ‘coming soon’ comes out without specifying a date. You can read more about the dates of the software updates in our article about the iOS 16 release date.

New Apple TV: Doubt

There are indications that Apple is working on a new Apple TV that will be released shortly. References to a new Siri Remote have appeared in the code of iOS 16 and sources state that an Apple TV 2022 with A14 chip will be coming. Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo says Apple will release a cheaper Apple TV this year, so it's likely something new is being worked on behind the scenes. But it is still unclear when Apple will release this and what exactly is new. The September event would be a logical timing, although we do find it quite soon after last spring's 2021 model of the Apple TV 4K.

The Apple TV would soon get an update. According to sources, Apple is working on an Apple TV with a faster chip, but what does Apple need this for?

iPad Pro 2022: coming, but may be later

The fact that an iPad Pro 2022 is being worked on is like an Apple Pencil. It has been a year and a half since Apple released the current iPad Pro and usually Apple releases a new model every year to a year and a half. The new iPad Pro 2022 will probably get an M2 chip and support for wireless charging, whether or not via MagSafe. Some of the new features of the iPad Pro 2022 have already been leaked, so it's just a matter of waiting for it to arrive. We honestly think that Apple will announce this iPad Pro later, during an event in October. That also has to do with the delay of iPadOS 16, which we talked about earlier.

Entry iPad 2022: coming, but possibly later

What applies to the iPad Pro 2022, probably also applies to the iPad 2022. That this model is coming is no secret. After all, Apple releases a new entry-level iPad every year. But due to the delay of iPadOS 16, Apple could release this model a little later than usual and therefore announce it later. A separate event with this and the iPad Pro, supplemented with new Macs, therefore makes sense. Incidentally, the new entry-level iPad may have a new design for the first time in years, with flat sides. There are also rumors of usb-c in the new entry-level iPad.

More announcements: Apple headset and Macs may come later

There are more products in development that Apple will announce sometime in the coming months, but may come later than during the September event. This is a completely new product category and a number of new Macs.

Apple mixed reality headset

There have been rumors for years about an AR/VR headset from Apple, also known as a mixed reality headset. The first version would therefore combine augmented and virtual reality in a relatively expensive product, which is mainly intended for a niche market. With this model, Apple would like to focus on three aspects: communication, gaming and media consumption. It has long been rumored that Apple would announce the headset in 2022 and originally the unveiling was even planned for last WWDC. But analyst Ming-Chi Kuo thinks Apple will only present the headset in January 2023 during a special event, as they did with the very first iPhone. We will therefore have to see if the headset will make an appearance during the September 2022 event.

New Macbooks:

Apple is working behind the scenes on several new Macs: a MacBook Pro with M2 Pro/Max chip, a Mac mini with M2 and M2 Pro chips, and also a big new iMac. But these are all products that don't fit a September event. New Macs, including a new Mac mini and MacBook Pro, are expected at the earliest at an event in October, likely at the same time as the iPad Pro. Apple is also developing a new Mac Pro and an external display, but they won't be available until later this year or sometime next year.
