  6. Five years of Android updates

Similar to the Galaxy Z Fold 4, the fourth generation of the Galaxy Z Flip is launched with several detailed improvements that ensure a more rounded overall package. However, Samsung has not made any changes to the size or resolution of the inner and outer screens. However, the horizontally foldable smartphone also features a 45 percent more resistant Ultra Thin Glass (UTG) from Schott on the inside and Gorilla Glass Victus+ on the outside. The primary 6.7-inch screen again has 1,080 × 2,640 pixels at 1 to 120 Hz and supports HDR10+. With 10 MP and a pixel size of 1.22 μm, the camera integrated as a punch hole in the panel has the same specifications as the Galaxy Z Flip 3 (test).

Flex modes for more apps

From the clamshell design, the manufacturer pulls various flex modes that divide the content between the two halves of the smartphone, such as the keyboard and written text, controls and videos in YouTube, or the camera section and the shutter button. Videos and group selfies can be recorded from different angles in FlexCam mode. From a cooperation with Meta, the camera apps integrated into Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp also support the various folding positions of the smartphone.

Camera gets larger pixels

A new primary camera is responsible for the recordings, the sensor of which has been given larger pixels with an edge length of 1.8 instead of 1.4 μm from Samsung, while the native resolution of 12 MP and the aperture of f/1.8 remain the same. Samsung has also carried over features such as dual-pixel AF and OIS from last year's generation. The same goes for the 123-degree FoV, 12 MP ultra-wide-angle camera, but here with smaller 1.12 μm pixels.

Outer display supports more functions

The two cameras are located in the upper half next to the outer display, which has 260 × 512 pixels on 1.9 inches. A larger panel had been speculated in advance, but in the end the dimensions match the Galaxy Z Flip 3. Instead, there are functional changes, which include paying by smartphone when closed. So far, Google Pay or Samsung Pay could not be processed via the outer display because the fingerprint sensor in the smartphone's power button was only available after opening it. The cover screen also supports features like calling, texting, and SmartThings smart home control. New designs for clocks and backgrounds are also available, the latter can now also be saved as a video or GIF.

Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 and 12 percent larger battery

As with the Galaxy Z Fold 4, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 from TSMC-N4 production serves as the new processor, which is always supported by 8 GB LPDDR5. In addition to storage configurations with 128 and 256 GB, there is a new variant with 512 GB. Although the dimensions of the smartphone at 84.9 × 71.9 × 17.1 mm (closed) and 165.2 × 71.9 × 6.9 mm (open) have hardly changed and, strictly speaking, are even smaller, Samsung brings With 3,700 mAh, it has a 12 percent larger battery, which this time can be charged with 25 instead of 15 watts. Wireless charging is supported with 10 watts, in the opposite direction 4.5 watts are possible. Compared to last year, the weight increases slightly to 187 g. The smartphone is again protected against the ingress of water according to IPX8.

Market start on August 26 from 1,099 euros

Samsung plans to launch the Galaxy Z Flip 4 on August 26 with prices starting at 1,099 euros (128 GB). That's $50 more than the base model of the Galaxy Z Flip 3. The 256GB storage configuration is $1,159, with 512GB it's $1,279. In addition, the 256 GB model is also available exclusively in Samsung's online shop as a “Bespoke Edition” at a price of 1,199 euros, where buyers can choose the colors for the hinge and the front and back from a total of 75 combinations. The four standard colors, on the other hand, include “Bora Purple”, “Graphite”, “Pink Gold” and “Blue”. The manufacturer is accepting pre-orders from today until August 25 and combines the smartphone with one year of Samsung Care+.
