Fitbit stops with Mac software
This makes Fitbit wearables a bit less attractive for Apple users. Fitbit also does not offer a link with Apple's HealthKit, so you can only sync your Fitbit workout data with your iPhone via a detour. Removing the synchronization with the Mac makes it more difficult to convert your data. The Fitbit Connect app will shut down on October 13, 2022.
Google writes in a support article:
On October 13, 2022 we're removing the option to sync your Fitbit device with the Fitbit Connect app on your computer. Download and use the Fitbit app on your phone to sync your device.
From now on you can only sync your workout data if you have the Fitbit app installed on your smartphone or tablet. There are no other options. It's unclear why Fitbit (or parent company Google) made the decision. One of the options is that it will be merged with Google's software platforms. In time, Wear OS could offer support for offline saving of Spotify and YouTube Music.
Fitbit Connect is free software for Mac and PC to sync data from your fitness tracker or smartwatch to the desktop. You can also transfer music with it. This works via a dongle or wirelessly via Bluetooth.
What does it mean to you?
If you're currently a Fitbit user, syncing workout data via the desktop won't be your primary concern. Smartphones are now so widespread that anyone can use the Fitbit app on their iPhone or Android device. Transferring music becomes a lot more difficult.
Once the service stops, you can only transfer music via the Deezer and Pandora apps, if you have a subscription there. However, Pandora is only active in the US and Deezer is a lot less popular than Spotify and Apple Music.
You could try to continue using the Fitbit Connect software after October 13, in the hopes that the servers will be up and running for a while.
New Fitbits on the way
Fitbit currently sells the Sense, Versa 3, Charge 5 and Inspire 2 as its main products. The successors Versa 4, Sense 2 and Inspire 3 are expected in a few weeks. Around that time there will also be a refreshed Apple Watch SE 2022, which may be a better option.
