Who die spoiled for choice! Or not?

The sheer overwhelming number of distributions, spin-offs (“forks”), derivatives and flavors alone, which in turn can be combined with various desktops and window managers, continues to deter many users outside of the circles of experts and enthusiasts, it is said. All in all, an absolutely justified criticism, which is rightly raised in particular by the group of satisfied or at least more satisfied users of Windows 11 and Windows 10.

Anyone who is using for the first time today Linux as a possible alternative to Windows, is confronted with the following facts right at the beginning of his considerations.

  • There are 265 distributions listed on DistroWatch…
  • …and almost 200 other distributions on the waiting list.
  • There are currently 600 to 800 distributions worldwide…
  • …however, the number of unreported cases will be significantly higher.
  • For desktops, the main competitors are…
  • …Gnome, KDE Plasma, Xfce and Cinnamon.< /li>

But how does the community rate the large selection of distributions, derivatives and desktops? curse or blessing? Frustration or Freedom? The editors are looking forward to many well-founded comments and exciting discussions in the comment area for this Sunday question in the ComputerBase forum.
