In the test 15 years ago: Xigmatek was on the way to success with the HDT-S1283

After Xigmatek shook up the cooler market in the 92 mm segment with the HDT-S963 (tested 15 years ago) for 25 euros, the 120 mm equivalent followed with the HDT-S1283 (Test). With a price of 35 euros, the cooler was cheap and offered excellent cooling performance.

8mm heat pipe with Direct Touch

Like the smaller HDT-S963, the HDT-1283 relied on Xigmatek's Heatpipe Direct Touch (HDT) technology, in which the heatpipes were in direct contact with the processor's heatspreader. The HDT-1283 uses three 8 mm heat pipes, which transport the waste heat to 55 aluminum fins. The overall weight of the cooler, which measures 120 × 76 × 159 mm (L × W × H), was about 680 g. The supplied 120 mm fan worked at a maximum of 2,200 rpm and was controlled by PWM.

The installation of the cooler was easy and uncomplicated. The HDT-S1283 was attached to Intel systems using a push-pin system, AMD users could attach the cooler to the mainboard's retention module with retaining clips. The mainboard never had to be removed, which saved time and nerves. Only users with flat cases had to exercise caution, since the model was comparatively high at 159 mm.

Outstanding performance

The cooling performance of the Xigmatek HDT-S1283 was outstanding, in the test it shared first place with the Scythe Infinity at maximum speed. If you throttled the supplied fan from around 1,800 rpm to 900 rpm, you only had to lose 4 Kelvin and at the same time reduced the sound pressure level from a deafening 50.9 dB(A) to an acceptable 36.8 dB(A). The performance was significantly lower at an inaudible 31.0 dB(A) at around 230 rpm, here the CPU temperature rose by a further 16 Kelvin to 78 °C. For comparison: The Scythe Infinity reached 65 °C at 565 rpm with a sound pressure level of 30.4 dB(A). Accordingly, the strengths of the HDT-S1283 were clearly in the higher speed ranges with strong ventilation.

Conclusion

For 35 euros, the Xigmatek HDT-S1283 was an excellent cooler – especially for users who wanted very high cooling performance. With the fan throttled to 900 rpm, the sound pressure level was okay. Anyone who really valued an inaudible system had to turn to the competition in the form of the Scythe Infinity. One alternative was to replace the supplied fan, which also made grinding noises at speeds below 500 rpm, with a better model.
