Rumor: '2022 entry-level iPad gets a new design with flat sides, but with a home button'

Apple's entry-level iPad is known for reusing parts. That is why this model still has the old design and the price is a lot lower than other models. But that is often more than enough for the target group. But if you are really tired of the old design, there may be good news for the 2022 model. Renders and schematic drawings have appeared, which the source says are the iPad 2022. On it we see the new design, but also a number of other remarkable changes.

‘iPad 2022 design: flat sides with home button’

The renders show a design very reminiscent of that of the iPad Air and iPad Pro. This seems to be an aluminum housing with flat sides, instead of the more rounded design that you have come to expect from this model in recent years. But normally flat sides mean an iPad without a home button, as we see with the iPad Pro and iPad Air. However, that does not seem to be the case with this new entry-level iPad 2022.

If we look at the front in the renders, we see a rectangular screen as you are already used to from this type of model. That means black bars on both the top and bottom. This is most likely not a Liquid Retina display, but a regular Retina display. Apple therefore seems to have simply taken the existing screen, in the housing of more modern iPads. In terms of screen size, the renders don't tell us much, although there are rumors that Apple is opting for a 10.5-inch display (instead of 10.2-inch).

In the drawings, there is simply a home button below the screen, most likely with Touch ID. Other details that emerge from the renders are a new camera and speaker holes on all short sides. As for the speakers: don't cheer too hard, because the iPad Air and the latest iPad mini also have speaker holes on all sides, but you only get stereo sound if you hold the iPad horizontally. The iPad Pro is the only model that actually has a speaker in every corner, so you have both landscape and portrait stereo sound.

There have been rumors about usb-c in the entry-level iPad of 2022. It is not clear on these renders whether this is usb-c, but this seems likely given the design. After all, all iPads with this design have this connection. In addition, this flat-sided design allows for magnetic charging of the Apple Pencil 2. Currently, the standard iPad still supports the first generation Apple Pencil, but if Lightning is exchanged for USB-c, that is no longer an option. The first generation Apple Pencil can only be charged via Lightning, while you click the Apple Pencil 2 wirelessly and magnetically on the side.

Apple is set to announce the new iPad 2022 this fall, but the iPad 2022 release may be slightly later than usual. You can read why that is in our previous article.
