AMD's sales are growing and growing. In the second quarter of the 2022 fiscal year, it was again 70 percent higher than a year ago. The acquisition of Xilinx played a major part in this, but the previous business also grew significantly. The gaming segment was up 32 percent, while Ryzen for PCs was up 25 percent.

Never before did AMD take more money a

AMD earned USD 6.55 billion in the period from March 26 to June 25, 2022, exactly as much as forecast. That is 70 percent more than a year ago. The already very good result of the 1st quarter of 2022 (+71 percent compared to the previous year) of 5.8 billion US dollars was again clearly exceeded. Never before has the group made so much money in three months. For comparison: After a significant decline, Intel reported quarterly sales of 15.3 billion US dollars last week.

The takeovers are still putting pressure on profits

AMD's net income (US GAAP) fell from US$710 million to US$447 million in the same period, mainly due to the amortization of intangible assets as a result of the Xilinx acquisition and costs from the Pensando acquisition – US$1.5 billion costs were incurred as a result of the takeover. Adjusted for these effects, the operating profit rose significantly from 0.8 to 1.7 billion US dollars in line with sales. The effect of the Xilinx takeover will only really show up in the following quarters.

The gross margin remained at a high, albeit slightly lower level: 46 instead of 48 percent of the sales AMD remained after deducting the variable costs.

All sectors have increased, GPUs more than CPUs

AMD now reports sales and profits separately for the Data Center (Epyc, including Xilinx), Client (Ryzen), Gaming (Radeon, Semi-Custom), Embedded (including Xilinx) and Other divisions. The embedded divisions (54 million US dollars vs. 1.3 billion US dollars, mainly due to Xilinx) and data centers (0.8 to 1.5 billion US Dollar, +81 percent), but also gaming (1.3 to 1.7 billion US dollars, +32 percent) and client (1.7 to 2.2 billion US dollars, +25 percent) grew .

As a result, business with GPUs developed more strongly than that with Ryzen, whose growth, according to AMD, was mainly achieved from the sale of mobile CPUs. In the case of graphics cards, the sharp rise in sales of semi-custom chips for game consoles masked a decline in sales of GPUs for graphics cards.

Sales should continue to rise

For the current 3rd quarter, AMD expects sales of a further higher 6.7 billion US dollars with a gross margin (non-GAAP) higher by one percentage point. For the current fiscal year, the group is sticking to its forecast of 26.3 billion US dollars in sales. In the earnings conference call, AMD officially confirmed that the 7950X, 7900X, 7700X and 7600X will be released in Q3.
