Users complain about audio problems at Studio Display, but Apple has no solution

Last spring, Apple unveiled the Studio Display, a new 27-inch screen with built-in camera, speakers and microphone. The screen is mainly intended for the Mac Studio, but is also suitable for other Macs, MacBooks and iPads. But after the first reviews, the first problems appeared with the Studio Display's camera. Apple has now made some improvements in this area with a software update, but lately other problems have cropped up again. This time it concerns issues with the speakers and audio on the Studio Display.

Problems with speakers Studio Display: no sound

Multiple users are complaining about audio issues on Twitter, and there are multiple threads on Apple's support forum about similar issues as well. Users complain that the audio simply stops on the Studio Display after a while. No sound comes out of the speakers or the sound comes in fits and starts. The microphone also regularly gives problems, where it also drops out every time. The problems have been going on for months, but seem to be popping up more and more recently.

The problem seems to be in the software of the display. The camera, speakers and microphone are controlled by a modified version of iOS. There may be a bug in this, which means that the sound can drop out and the microphone does not respond. So the good news is that it's not a hardware issue and Apple may fix it in a future update.

Apple doesn't have a solution yet

But that solution is not there yet. MacRumors got hold of an internal memo addressed to authorized service providers. It states that Apple admits that users may experience problems with the speakers of the Studio Display. If this problem occurs, Apple advises users to completely disconnect the display from cables and accessories and unplug the power cord. After ten seconds you can connect the screen again and plug it into the socket. This seems to be only a temporary solution, although it doesn't work for everyone.

For some users, it is necessary to unplug the screen for a lot longer. That is rather inconvenient if you are in the middle of a meeting or busy at work. Some users need to restart their screen regularly. And because there is no on/off button, disconnecting the plug from the socket is the only option. The power cable is also not easy to remove from the screen.

We expect Apple to release a new software update soon. Fortunately, updating the Studio Display is very simple.
