Apple Pay will soon work in browsers other than Safari (but not on the desktop)

Since 2016 you can not only use Apple Pay in physical stores via the NFC chip in the iPhone or Apple Watch, but also in online webshops for easier payment of your orders. Since 2019, various online stores in the Netherlands have been supporting Apple Pay. But one limitation has always been that you could only use Apple Pay on the web from Safari. In iOS 16, that seems to be changing, developer Steve Moser discovered. Apple Pay is also coming to other browsers, such as Chrome. But this currently only applies to iPhone and iPad.

Apple Pay in Chrome, Firefox and more

In the latest betas of iOS 16 in browsers other than Safari, if you go to an online store that accepts Apple Pay, you will see that the Buy with Apple Pay button appears as normal. Previously (in iOS 15 and earlier) Apple Pay was hidden as a payment method when you made the purchase in, for example, Google Chrome or Firefox. The fact that Apple Pay is now also coming to Chrome, Firefox and Edge is good news for anyone who prefers a browser other than Safari.

Apple Pay on the web in Chrome, Firefox and Edge in iOS 16

It is not surprising that Apple Pay from iOS 16 also works in other browsers such as Google Chrome and Firefox. All browsers on iPhone and iPad must use WebKit, the engine behind the Safari browser. Browsers like Chrome on iPhone and iPad are in fact nothing more than another skin of the Safari browser, with hardly any speed improvements. The advantage is that the browsers synchronize with the browsers of the same name on the desktop and that the versions are similar in design.

iOS 16 is still in development, so Apple can still decide not to make the change once the update is out for everyone. It is good news for webshops, because they (at least not on mobile anymore) are no longer dependent on Safari. This may convince more webshops to add the payment method. You still need an iPhone or iPad.

No Apple Pay in Chrome, Firefox and more on desktop

On the Mac, it's a different story. At the moment, even in macOS Ventura, it is not possible to pay from a browser other than Safari on the web with Apple Pay. On the Mac and MacBooks you can therefore only pay online with Apple Pay via Safari. Apple does not currently allow using Apple Pay in other browsers on the Mac. This may also have to do with privacy, because Apple does not allow browser makers to access your payment information with their own browser engine. This is not an issue on the iPhone and iPad, because the browsers there use WebKit, with Apple being responsible for security.

Apple Pay will receive a number of other improvements in iOS 16. You can read more about this in our separate article.
