Almost four years after version 5.8, which was released as a beta in October 2018 and was therefore never final, the classic media player Winamp 5.9 Build 9999 was released as a release candidate. While the beta was intended to ensure compatibility with Windows 10 back then, Winamp 5.9 now runs on Windows 11.
First final release in almost 9 years approaching itself
The once extremely popular media player Winamp, which was particularly widespread around the turn of the millennium, from the American developer Nullsoft appeared more than 25 years ago as shareware for Windows 95 and quickly established itself as the standard for playing MP3s.
The “old” Winamp had its heyday with the advent of compressed music in MP3 format and dueled at the turn of the millennium with competitors such as AIMP and Foobar2000, which also had many followers.
But after more than 16 years, Winamp came to an end in 2013, version 5.666 from December 12, 2013 remained the last final version of the media player to this day. Now Winamp 5.9 is about to take over the legacy of Winamp 5.6.
In addition to compatibility with Windows 11, the official release notes list improved playback of audio streams and Podcasts and support for VP8.

In addition, there are the obligatory optimizations and error corrections that come with every new release. The latest Build 9999 of Winamp 5.9 is still listed as Release Candidate 1 and is intended to precede the final release.

In October 2018, Radionomy announced Winamp 6 as a complete re-release, but has not yet delivered a finished product.
With “Winamp – The ultimate media player” the company went on the offensive again in September 2021 and was actively looking for beta testers. Nothing has changed in this status to date and even a public beta is still not in sight.
