The US computer manufacturer and Linux distributor System76 has now released its latest operating system Pop!_OS 22.04 LTS for the Raspberry Pi 4 single-board computer for the first time. The Linux distribution is based on Ubuntu 22.04 LTS and the in-house Cosmic UX, a Gnome 42-based UI for the desktop.

In addition to the regular edition and the version of Pop!_OS 22.04 LTS specially designed for systems with an Nvidia GPU, System76 now also offers a build of its operating system optimized for the popular single-board computer Raspberry Pi 4, which is initially running as a tech preview.

Unlike the current LTS release from Ubuntu, which is based on Linux 5.15 LTS, Pop!_OS 22.04 LTS uses the Linux 5.16 operating system kernel ex works and thus already supports more up-to-date hardware and features.

Updates can be better planned

In addition to a bug-fixed Cosmic UX, which has not received any significant new functions since its introduction with the release of Pop!_OS 21.04 and the feature set in Pop!_OS 21.10, the official release notes particularly mention the planned updates for Debian, Flatpak and NIX software packages.

The Pop!_OS 22.04 release notes also list a new Updates and System Restore panel in the operating system settings.

Automatic Updates

  • Update and upgrade Pop!_OS automatically from the OS Upgrade & Recovery panel in Settings!
  • Minimize interruption by scheduling what day & time that you want your computer to perform the updates. Scheduled automatic updates include support for Debian, Flatpak, and NIX packages.
  • To reduce distractions, notifications for available updates are set to show weekly by default. The frequency can also be set to daily or monthly notifications.
  • Notifications won't show if you have automatic updates enabled. Automatic updates are turned off by default.

New scheduler for more performance

Automatic updates, on the other hand, are no longer activated by default and only have to be activated at the user's request. The newly developed System76 scheduler aims to improve the performance of running applications and distribute the available resources more intelligently. The performance should be automatically redirected to focused windows.

Enhanced Performance with the System76 Scheduler

  • The System76 Scheduler optimizes performance by directing resources to the window in focus. So if you're doing something intense like gaming in full screen, you'll get a much smoother experience.

In addition, Pop!_OS is now using the PipeWire audio server developed by Wim Taymans for Red Hat as the new standard audio processing system and as a server for video streams, audio playback and hardware.

The Pop!_OS Shop has also been revamped for the release and has a new home page that now highlights recently released apps. The entire backend of the shop has also undergone a corresponding product update.

A New and Improved Pop!_Shop < ul class="text-ul">

  • After some significant renovations, the Pop!_Shop is once again open for business! The updated storefront includes:
    • Backend code improvements for more responsive operations
    • Improved reliability for package operations (update, install, etc.)
    • UI Improvements to aid in allowing small window sizes for tiling
    • Update and Install buttons now also function as a progress bar
    • New “Recently Updated” homepage section highlighting newly added/updated apps
  • The result is a consistently smooth overall experience that we know you'll love.
  • The Arm64 optimized Pop!_OS 22.04 LTS system image for the Raspberry Pi 4 can be downloaded directly from the project's official website. The German-speaking YouTube channel “MichlFranken” took a look at Pop!_OS 22.04 LTS and presents the distribution and the Cosmic UX in detail.
