After price increases for Prime membership in the USA in February and preparatory adjustments to the terms of use in other countries in June, Amazon has now announced significantly higher prices for Amazon Prime: from September 15th 89.90 euros are due for the annual subscription instead of the previous 69.00 euros.
30 percent higher annual fees
This corresponds to a price increase of 30 percent. From mid-September, the monthly subscription will cost EUR 8.99 instead of the previous EUR 7.99 – a price increase of almost 13 percent. The price advantage of the annual subscription is reduced to 18 instead of the previous 27 euros.
Students, trainees and customers who can prove that they are also exempt from the GEZ fee, continue to pay 50 percent off the regular price, so from September 15 also more. Amazon informed German Prime customers about the new features by e-mail last night.
Amazon justifies the drastic price increase with the persistently high inflation, which means “general and significant cost changes” for the group. The change will take effect at the earliest when the next payment is due on or after September 15, 2022.

From 29 to 90 euros in 15 years
Amazon last increased its Prime fees in Germany in 2016. At that time, the monthly subscription was also introduced, whereas previously there had only been an annual contract. Its price rose in 2016 by 40 percent from 49 to 69 euros. Prime was launched in Germany in 2007 with an annual fee of EUR 29, and Amazon Prime Video was introduced at the beginning of 2014 with an adjustment to EUR 49.
Amazon Prime includes in addition to the delivery free of charge, even below a shopping cart value of 29 euros for “Prime products”, also the delivery in the faster “Premium shipping”, which usually guarantees delivery on the next working day. In addition, Prime includes the video streaming service Amazon Prime Video and the music streaming service Amazon Prime Music.
Price increase in five EU countries -Countries
Parallel to the price increase in Germany, Amazon has announced price increases for Austria, Great Britain, Spain, Italy and France for September 15th.
