Apple Music for students gets more expensive

Apple introduced the special student discount for Apple Music a few years ago. It means that you can listen to the music offer from Apple's music service for half the money. Everything else is the same as with the normal €9.99 – except that you must be able to prove that you are a student. It's a nice offer if you live on your own and can't use even cheaper options such as a family subscription for 6 people.

Apple announced the price increase to people who now have a current student subscription to Apple Music. In doing so, use is made of the new possibility to increase prices without the user's consent. This capability was introduced in May this year after a test with Disney+. The price of the subscription was also increased without permission. It used to be that people who had a certain subscription from the very beginning could continue it for the same price for the same price for a number of days. Apple is increasingly dependent on long-term subscriptions for revenue and is benefiting from price increases by skimming 15% to 30% off.

When you receive the notification from Apple, you can do two things: let your Apple Music student subscription continue and thereby tacitly agree to the price increase, or cancel in time. Optionally, you can cancel and later still take Apple Music with a student discount, although you will have to go through the approval mill again. You might also consider joining a family, paying $2.50 per month per person (€14.99 divided by 6) or opting for Apple One, the all-in-one. a bundle that also includes Apple Arcade and more storage.

The price of the regular subscriptions (€9.99 individual and €14.99 for a family) hasn't changed yet, but that should may happen over time. In the meantime, we're also waiting for Apple's Back to School promotion for students. It has already been announced for the US, but has not yet started in Europe.
