Inflation and the economic crisis have a firm grip on the world. After falling cryptocoins, two more fantasy currencies are now affected, but this time things are going up: The costs for in-game purchases in League of Legends are increasing, as Riot Games has now announced. Before that, however, there are still two weeks of discounts.

Inflation reaches Runeterra

On August 19, 2022, the prices for RP and TFT coins in League of Legends and Teamfight Tactics are to be “adjusted”, as the developer put it diplomatically. What is meant, however, are consistent price increases – worldwide. The reasons are varied, Riot Games itself tries to list them. On the one hand there is global inflation, there are currency fluctuations, and one also wants to keep fair prices between and within the different regions. What is meant is, for example, the relationship between prices in Europe and the USA – since the euro is at a 20-year low against the US dollar, American players are currently paying theoretically higher prices.

RP and TFT Coin prices will increase in most Riot regions to account for worldwide inflation, currency fluctuations, maintaining fair prices between and within regions, consistency across our products, and other associated cost increases. While our annual price reviews often lead to changes in only a handful of regions, this year's analysis identified economic shifts on a global scale, hence the worldwide impact.

This in turn suggests that Riot Games is increasing prices in this country; But that's not the case at all: The six individual packages with in-game currency are around 9.8 percent more expensive both in euros and in US dollars. In pounds sterling it is even 10.9 percent. However, increased costs were also taken into account, the developer notes, without being specific. Ultimately, it is also about consistency with other productions in the portfolio – presumably the tactical shooter Valorant is meant. It is not yet known whether its in-game currency, called Valorant Points, will also become more expensive.

In any case, the current inflation rate is beaten at around 9.8 percent – even when adjusted for inflation, the costs are rising as a result. At least there is one more customer-friendly adjustment: From now on, it will be ensured that a champion skin for 1,350 RP can be bought in a single transaction with as little waste as possible, according to Riot Games.

Discount campaign and Game Pass as an alternative

Before the prices rise, the developer is tempting Meanwhile, again with two discounted weeks: From July 14th to July 31st, players will receive double bonus coins for every purchase – not the entire amount of currency purchased is doubled, but only the corresponding bait bonus that increases with the package size. A potential way out for those who are particularly keen to buy can be found in Game Pass: Riot Games' Games added to Microsoft's gaming subscription. In the case of League of Legends, subscribers get access to all champions – in fact, these must also be purchased with RP.
