The car, one of the very few in the Sport version, belongs to former F1 driver Nick Heidfeld, who entrusted it to the skilled hands of the company's technicians and craftsmen in 2017.

EVERYTHING AS THEN, EVEN THE ENGINE

The 959 S of Heidfeld had just 4,183 km to his credit when it was built. arrived at the Porsche Classic headquarters in Stuttgart: even though it had barely been run in, it had already; need extensive overhaul technique: & quot; If such a car & # 39; ve; technologically innovative is not driven regularly, damage from excessive inventory is unfortunately inevitable, '' commented Uwe Makrutzki, Head of Restoration at Porsche Classic. & quot; The powertrain and chassis need to be overhauled in their entirety; Experience has shown that any reduction in the amount of work leads to problems in the future. '

Being a vintage Porsche, the 959 can too; benefit from the unique skills and equipment of this fully integrated department of the company: when the production of the super sports car is finished, Porsche Classic has taken possession of all testing tools and restoration of all areas of the factory, preserving them in order to reproduce, if necessary, procedures and components, while for the most important parts; rare, we rely on reproduction via 3D printing.

A ci & ograve; the special experience is addedof the Classic division with this particular model, always subject to special care. & quot; Almost all 959s produced have been to us at least once in their life, so we have done a lot of practice & quot; Makrutzki added. “However, thanks to its extremely complex technology, the overhaul of a 959 & egrave; always a very special and wonderful mission. & quot;

In the case of Heidfeld's 959 Sport, the diagnosis revealed, among other things, that the engine management systemhad been modified. In agreement with the owner, the Porsche Classic staff brought back the unit & agrave; Motronic in original condition. In order to guarantee its good functioning over time, however, it is advisable to make regular trips: & quot; Drive at least once a month about 100 kilometers in modality & agrave; mixed protects against damage due to inactivity, as the feedback from our customers confirms.

THE HISTORY OF 959

In 1983, Porsche presented & ograve; at the IAA the project of a car conceived for the & quot; Group B & quot ;, able to satisfy the regulations of this spectacular rally class, and which in the following years became reality. Thus, after a not so fortunate debut season, in 1986 he arrived & ograve; the victory in the Paris-Dakar in which the three 959s took first, second and sixth place. The modified version for the track, the 961, was classified & ograve; also seventh in the 1986 Le Mans endurance race and obtained victory in the IMSA/GTX class.

The production model made its debut at the IAA in Frankfurt in 1985. The innovative solutions adopted from the car included adjustable shock absorbers and speed-sensitive, self-leveling suspension, variable distribution all-wheel drive with electronic control and driving program selection, ABS, a tire pressure monitoring system and an aerodynamically optimized bodywork (Cd 0.31). The design incorporated racing car and aircraft technology: the outer frame was made of Kevlar and fiberglass-reinforced epoxy, while the front spoiler was made of integral polyurethane foam. The doors and the bonnet, on the other hand, were made of a special aluminum alloy.

REFINED BOLIDE sequential supercharging : the two turbochargers operating in sequence helped to reduce turbo-lag, the titanium connecting rods reduced the oscillating masses on the crankshaft and the cylinders were air-cooled, as was customary for the Porsches of the time, while the four-valve heads were water-cooled. For better heat dissipation, the exhaust valves were coated with sodium.

There are just 292 Porsche 959s built in series from 1987 to 1988 and of these, only 29 were ordered in Sport trim. This variant was equipped with more turbochargers; large for a higher boost pressure and released 515 HP against the 450 HP of the base model, for a speed; maximum that reached 339 km/h, 24 km/h more; of the standard version. The 959 Sport also gave up on self-leveling suspension, automatic climate control, central locking, power windows, right rearview mirror and even rear seats, all features removed to save weight
