For the time being, Xiaomi has only presented the 12S Ultra as the new smartphone flagship for the Chinese market and one of three successors to the previous 12 series. In the foreground is a camera developed with Leica, which uses a particularly large sensor from Sony. The new Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 is also used.

With the 12S Ultra, Xiaomi relies on a so-called “1” sensor” from Sony, which the supplier uses under the name IMX989. Sensors of this size class have an actual size of 0.52″ × 0.35″ and come to a diagonal of only 0.63″, which corresponds to 15.9 mm. Nevertheless, this results in an above-average pixel size of 1.6 μm, which after pixel binning from 50.3 to almost 12.6 megapixels effectively results in 3.2 μm. The Sony Xperia PRO-I also uses a “1-inch sensor”, but the Xiaomi 12S Ultra should do without a crop and use the sensor over the entire surface.

Leica provides expertise and image modes

The cooperation with Leica mainly relates to the lens and the image processing. Leica's expertise in lenses has been combined with Xiaomi's expertise in miniaturization to minimize negative properties such as lens flare, ghosting or chromatic aberration. The primary camera's aspheric lens is composed of eight plastic elements (8P) and works with 23mm focal length at f/1.9.

First Android -Smartphone with Dolby Vision

Xiaomi explains that the “Leica Authentic Look” is intended to create natural images that Leica is known for, while the “Leica Vibrant Look” was also coordinated by the smartphone manufacturer and correspondingly trendy colors and a more dramatic look can be expected. Photos can be output as JPEG and HEIF with 12.6 or 50 megapixels in 8-bit sRGB. Alternatively, DNG is available as a RAW format with 12.6 megapixels and 10 bits. The Xiaomi 12S Ultra is also the first Android smartphone that can record and play back Dolby Vision in up to 4K60. In 8K mode, the device is limited to 24 FPS.

The ultra wide-angle camera is based on the 1/2" large Sony IMX586 with 48 megapixels and has a focal length of 13 mm at f/2.2. Behind the telephoto with 120 mm at f/4.1 is the same Sony sensor, but here with an OIS in addition to the autofocus.

Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 delivers performance, as it was recently used in the Asus ROG Phone 6 (Pro) (test), which is combined with 8 GB or 12 GB RAM and 256 GB or 512 GB storage. The 4,860 mAh battery can be charged with a cable with 67 watts, wirelessly it is 50 watts or 10 watts in the opposite direction.

For now only for China from 870 euros

So far, Xiaomi has only announced the 12S Ultra for the Chinese market. Depending on the configuration, the smartphone will be available there at prices equivalent to 869, 943 and 1,016 euros.
