In the test 15 years ago: Corsair's Voyager GT was the best USB stick for 100 euros

In a test 15 years ago, eleven USB sticks (test) with USB 2.0 with prices ranging from 11 to 100 euros were put to the test. The Corsair Voyager GT for just under 100 euros was particularly convincing thanks to its excellent performance and lavish equipment.

From Adata to Verbatim

The eleven USB sticks covered five manufacturers and capacities from 1 to 8 GB. The price per GB ranged from 7.25 euros at the lower end to 23.60 euros.

The first candidate was the Adata PD7 for 15 euros with 1 GB of memory. It came in an aluminum-style plastic case. The manufacturer stated read and write speeds of 30 and 20 MB/s respectively and also included a 55 cm extension cable.

The second manufacturer represented Connect 3D with the pocket drive in sizes of 1, 2 and 4 GB. At 19/17 MB/s for reading/writing, the specified speeds were significantly lower than for Adata, but the prices were also lower at 11 (1 GB), 16 (2 GB) and 29 euros (4 GB). In terms of accessories, Connect 3D had a 90 cm extension cable and a lanyard to which the USB stick could be attached.

The spearhead of the USB sticks tested was Corsair's Voyager GT, which was available in the 8 GB version and was advertised with read and write speeds of 34 and 28 MB/s, respectively. For a price of 94 euros, customers also received a lanyard, a 55 cm long USB extension cable and the freeware TrueCrypt for encrypting data. The Voyager GT had a waterproof rubber case that also protected it from knocks, bumps and drops – but the USB stick was so thick that it blocked adjacent USB ports.

The Austrian manufacturer Satron was represented with three models from the PowerRAM 3.0 series and two variants from the Safe Stick 3.0 series. The PowerRAM 3.0 models had 2, 4 or 8 GB of memory and were specified with 30 MB/s reading and 22 MB/s writing. Apart from the actual USB stick, there were no accessories. The prices were 27 euros (2 GB), 41 euros (4 GB) and 100 euros (8 GB). The Safe Stick 3.0 models were the same USB sticks in a waterproof and dustproof rubber casing. The prices here were 28 euros for the 2 GB version and 49 euros for the 4 GB version. The last USB stick in the test was the SuperTalent RBST USB Flash Drive, which cost 23 euros with 1 GB of memory. The manufacturer advertised the USB stick with a read speed of 30 MB/s, but there was no information on the write speed.

Test results

The Corsair Voyager GT in particular cut a good figure in the benchmarks and came close to the advertised speeds. SuperTalent's RBST USB Flash Drive and Adata's PD7 also performed well – only the Pocket Drive products from Connect 3D with 1 and 4 GB had to take a hit and were not convincing. The model with a capacity of 2 GB surprisingly worked much faster.
