Once buried and forgotten genres have been climbing out of the grave for a number of years. In this case, it doesn't even need swarm funding: The continuation of the legendary Monkey Island series is being created with an old crew in the traditional format Series fathers direct

The series fathers Ron Gilbert, whose Studio Terrible Toybox is now building the next point-and-click adventure after Timbleweed Park, and Dave Grossmann are in charge of Return to Monkey Island. They cooperate with the rights holders: After the takeover by Disney, Lucasfilm Games takes care of games with the Disney licenses and the legacy of LucasArts.

Devolver Digital is also the publisher , which mainly offers indie games and titles in non-mainstream genres. It is already clear where Return to Monkey Island will be published: Devolver sells on Steam and usually also on GOG.

2022, nothing else

A first trailer reveals little else that is essential. Clint Bajakian, Peter McConnell and Michael Land are once again responsible for the soundtrack, and Dominic Armato, who already gave the voice to the bumbling anti-hero Guybrush Threepwood in the classics, was hired again to speak at least for the English language version. Only Tim Schafer, whose studio Double Fine now belongs to Microsoft, is missing from the big names.

Story and game mechanics are still completely in the dark, but a return of the series villain LeChuck can be assumed. Release is announced for 2022. Since no specific date has been given yet, it is more likely to be at the end of the year.

Monkey Island is one of the great adventure hits of the 1990s created by LucasArts. They are legendary for their humor and insult fencing: fights are fought by putting each other down. This isn't the first remake for Monkey Island: the first two games received remakes called “Special Edition” in 2010, plus a Telltale game.

Update 06/28/2022 7:28 p.m.

In which direction the game will go graphically and in terms of content is now demonstrated a short trailer. The graphic design is currently proving to be controversial both in the comments on YouTube and in the ComputerBase forum – it breaks a bit with the classics. In addition to the trailer, the developers have redesigned their website. There, visitors are now greeted by a humorous “pont-and-click” sequence.
