The world of aviation yes & egrave; committed to work to significantly reduce polluting emissions. For this, several companies are evaluating the use of new technologies for aircraft. Airbus , for example, is also working on hydrogen-powered aircraft : in February 2022 it announced ZEROe Demonstrator, that is; a modified A380 with newly developed engines and 4 liquid hydrogen tanks.

Airbus intends to launch its first commercial hydrogen aircraft in 2035 . To prepare for this major technical change – testing should begin in 2026 – Airbus has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Linde . The goal is building hydrogen infrastructure in airports around the world.

INFRASTRUCTURE IS NEEDED

If Airbus really aims to use hydrogen, it needs an adequate infrastructure to be able to refuel its future aircraft equipped with this technology. The two companies they will work to create a complete supply chain hydrogen, from production to airport storage, including the integration of refueling into normal ground handling operations.

The companies they plan to start a series of pilot projects in some airports from the beginning of 2023. No particular details have been provided of these initiatives and how they will be; structured production and storage of hydrogen in airports. In any case, Airbus and Linde also want to test the potential of & quot; Power-t-Liquid & quot; fuels. We are talking about a sustainable aviation fuel (SAF – Sustainable aviation fuel), obtained from liquid hydrocarbon produced synthetically through the conversion of electricity; renewable.

So, very interesting initiatives aiming at the decarbonisation of the air transport sector. Sabine Klauke , Airbus Chief Technical Officer, commented:

We are doing well with hydrogen as an important technological path to realize our ambition to place on market a zero-emissions commercial aircraft by 2035. The construction of the infrastructure is; equally crucial. This is why & eacute; we are working closely with partners such as Linde, who have decades of experience and expertise around the world in hydrogen storage and distribution.
