16-inch notebooks: MateBook 16s and D16 offer large displays and Alder Lake

Huawei is coming onto the German market with two new 16-inch notebooks. The MateBook 16s is a new premium notebook with a 3:2 display, while the MateBook D16 is more affordable and comes with a 16:10 screen. Both notebooks combine a comparatively large number of connections and new Intel Alder Lake processors.

In terms of performance, the MateBook 16s is the new flagship in Huawei's portfolio. In this country, the notebook is only offered with an Intel Core i9-12900H or Core i7-12700H, each of which is supported by 16 GB LPDDR5 and a 1 TB SSD. There is no dedicated graphics card in the slim aluminum housing; the integrated Iris Xe Graphics takes on this task instead.

Calibrated screen in 3:2 -Format

The main feature of the MateBook 16s is the 16-inch touch display in the uncommon 3:2 format, which provides 2,520 × 1,680 pixels at 60 Hz on an IPS panel with 10-bit color depth and a contrast ratio of 1,500: 1 and a brightness of 300 cd/m². Huawei specifies the color space coverage as 100 percent sRGB and states a color accuracy of Delta E < 1, which speaks for a factory calibration. The screen stands out from the crowd with narrow bezels on the left and right (5.2 mm) and above (7.3 mm) and achieves a 90 percent screen-to-body ratio.

Many connections analogous to the AMD variant

Due to the screen format, the case has unusual dimensions at 351 × 254.9 × 17.8 mm (W × D × H), but at 1,990 g it remains just under the 2 kg mark. The connections include Thunderbolt 4, HDMI 2.0, USB-C, two USB-A and 3.5 mm jack. With the exception of Thunderbolt 4, these are the same connections that the MateBook 16 already has, which uses AMD Ryzen 5000H instead of Alder Lake.

New webcam no longer films from below

Although the case is identical to the AMD variant, the keyboard area has been revised. The webcam is no longer hidden in the keyboard between the function keys, but is now above the screen and has a resolution of 1080p instead of 720p. The viewing angle and quality of the recordings should improve significantly, because up to now users have been filmed from an unfavorable angle from below. Users will still find a fingerprint sensor for Windows Hello in the power button. The notebook comes with Windows 11 Home, recognizes other nearby Huawei devices and can quickly connect to them thanks to NFC, and also allows the use of a Huawei tablet as an input device or secondary display.

Bundle with screen for the market launch

The energy supply is provided by an 84 Wh battery, which is charged via USB-C. In the Core i9 variant, the power supply has an output of 135 watts, with the Core i7 it is 90 watts. Further details can be found in the table at the end of the article. Huawei is already selling the MateBook 16s in space gray at a recommended price of 1,699 euros with a Core i7 and 1,899 euros with a Core i9. Until July 31, the manufacturer puts together a bundle with the MateView GT 27 worth 399 euros (RRP).

MateBook D16 gets a new chassis for 16:10

With the MateBook D16, the external changes are greater compared to the current model with AMD Ryzen 4000H, because Huawei has to revise the chassis for the new 16:10 format of the display accordingly. The previous MateBook D16 AMD still uses a 16:9 panel, which is why the new Intel version is slightly deeper at 369 × 234 × 18.4 mm (W × D × H). The new IPS screen has 1,920 × 1,200 pixels at 60 Hz and is said to achieve a contrast of 1,200:1 and a brightness of 300 cd/m².

16 GB RAM is standard

In terms of processor choices, there's the Core i7-12700H as in the MateBook 16s and the Core i5-12450H – the big one with Iris Xe Graphics, the small one with UHD Graphics. 16 GB LPDDR4 and a 512 GB SSD are on board independent of the CPU. The connections include two USB-C, two USB-A, HDMI 2.0 and 3.5 mm jack, but officially no Thunderbolt 4 despite the new Intel platform.

Webcam follows the user

In the previous MateBook D16 AMD, the webcam was also still in the keyboard and only offered 720p. The new Intel version clears that up and delivers 1080p with a better viewing angle above the screen. As Huawei explains, the wide-angle camera can intelligently follow the movements of the user with AI support. Four microphones with background noise suppression and two speakers cover the audio range.

Start from 949 euros with monitor

The MateBook D16 comes with a 60 Wh battery and Windows 11 Home, which has the same additional functions in combination with other Huawei devices as the MateBook 16s. The recommended retail price for the notebook available today is 949 euros with a Core i5 and 1,299 euros with a Core i7. Buyers will also receive the MateView GT 27 worth 399 euros (RRP) free of charge until July 31.
