Honda Civic e: HEV 2022: test and consumption of the compact full-hybrid | Video

Years go by, technologies change but the Honda Civic continues to remain a reference point in the automotive world, with over 50 years of history, 27.5 million units & agrave; sold and ten generations behind. Yes & egrave; so & igrave; arrived at the eleventh generation , probably the last to still adopt internal combustion engines (in part) before the definitive switch to electric. She for & ograve; was born completely hybrid , with e technology: full hybrid HEV gi & agrave; seen in the Honda world, with an innovative design, a quality & agrave; never seen before and the typical attention to driving dynamics that has always characterized the Japanese manufacturer. Prices starting from 34,200 euros , with the first deliveries scheduled for autumn 2022.

Each new Civic brings with s & eacute; a heavy load of expectations and with this latest generation we have aimed to enrich the sensations, emotions and daily life of all passengers.

comments Tomoyuki Yamagami , Large Project Leader again Civic and: HEV .

Honda's electrification strategy goes like this; to introduce over 30 fully electrified global models by 2030 , also including two high-performance electric sports cars.

The Honda Civic e: HEV of the eleventh generation exploits a technological and modern platform, evolved starting from the one already; present with the past generation. & Egrave; was reinforced from the point of view of the torsion – + 22% compared to the current Civic, on the levels of Civic Type R – without however & ograve; result more & ugrave; heavy ( 1,520 kg dry ). The arrangement of the components is completely new, so it is; to host now a full hybrid mechanics, debuting now on this model, abandoning the much loved 1.0 and 1.5 VTEC Turbo engines, including the efficient 1.6 Diesel.

The three units & agrave; they can therefore work in mode; EV Drive , with the electric motor that provides traction to the front wheels while the heat engine, through the generator, recharges the battery. & Egrave; then present the Engine Drive , in which the thermal engine, via a locking clutch, acts directly on the front axle, providing traction to the wheels, especially on the highway. Finally, in mode Hybrid Drive , the main electric motor and the petrol engine simultaneously provide traction; to the front wheels, when for example & egrave; maximum thrust request. The system also works in mode; parallel-series , in which the petrol engine acts directly on the wheels while recharging the battery which, at the same time, powers the electric motor that supports the thrust. The whole is; managed by the PCU , automatically based on the driver's requests, passing through a fixed-ratio transmission, free of clutches.

Thanks to the industry-leading e: HEV technology and advanced safety systems, Civic & egrave; now a viable solution for customers who want to embrace the new era of electrification. I believe both current and future customers will be amazed by this latest generation of Civic, and by the evolution accomplished

Explains Tomoyuki Yamagami , Large Project Leader of the new Civic e: HEV.

The new internal combustion engine, revised compared to that of CR-V & egrave; now able to achieve a thermal efficiency of 41% , almost a record for the automotive industry. The three engines are placed in the front area of the car, thus as the unit PCU control unit that manages the operation of the heat engine. The battery of about 1 kWh with 72 cells is; placed under the rear bench and powers the two electric motors. & Egrave; now more small and light compared to those used in the past, but with a greater density; energy (+ 46% compared to Honda CR-V).

Great push also on the technology side for the new Civic e: HEV, aiming to become a reference in the hatchback sector. You cannot & ograve; do not mention, standard , the Honda Sensing safety package on the first Elegance trim level, providing as standard a second level semi-assisted driving . In the upper area of the windshield & egrave; so & igrave; a new 100 & deg; camera is available, capable of detecting more effectively; clear pedestrians, bicycles, horizontal and vertical signs, other vehicles and all that & ograve; which can & ograve; appear on the street. There are also four sonar sensors on the front and four in the rear, essential in parking lots.

ADAS side, the automatic emergency braking, the active lane maintenance system, the i-ACC adaptive cruise control and the blind spot monitoring respond, continuing with the monitoring of the maneuvering traffic and the cruise assistance control even in traffic (Traffic Jam Assist).

Passive safety has also been improved with platform reinforcement elements, both from side but also front and upper impacts, with a total of 11 airbags , including those for the passengers' knees front, for the head and one designed to divide the shoulders of the front passengers.

Great technological momentum also for the passenger compartment, where the “ heavy '' setting is abandoned of the past model in favor of a greater aesthetic cleanliness, daughter of European tastes. The development & egrave; now mainly horizontal, with a Vintage-style grille running across the dashboard, above which a high-quality soft plastic cover stands out. Below it there are the comfortable and clear controls for managing the automatic climate, with physical rotors with excellent consistency and some displays to select the desired temperature. Under still & egrave; there is a comfortable cockpit that empties pockets in which it hides the induction charging for the smartphone. There are also two traditional USB sockets and a 12 V socket.

At the top, in plain sight, the new Infotainment system Honda Connect already appears. also seen on Honda HR-V, with a 9.0 & quot; display in diameter and some physical shortcuts in the left area. Not particularly captivating as graphics but complete with the necessary, including compatibility; with Apple Carplay and Android Auto , also wireless, and connected to the network, with OTA updates and WI-FI hotspot. From this one can & ograve; control the energy flow and track the consumption of the car.

In front of the steering wheel then appears a instrumentation analog-digital 9 & quot; or completely digital 10 , 2 & quot; in diameter (standard with the Advance set-up), with a high-resolution LCD display, useful for consulting all the main information while driving. Is not serious; for & ograve; interchangeable with the multimedia system.

Surprising then the space in the rear , where the extra 35 mm of the wheelbase was entirely dedicated to the passengers' legs. Now it boasts a record space for the sector, even for those who & egrave; higher higher of 1.90 m. Not bad headroom, considering the battery footprint and pitched roof. Also noteworthy is the trunk , starting from 410 liters , really roomy, with a hatbox that rolls up horizontally and a surprising vertical access mouth.

ROAD TEST In one go, Honda retires 3 engines on Civic, the 1.0 turbo, the 1.5 VTEC Turbo and the 1.6 Diesel. In their place comes the only hybrid mechanics e: HEV with 184 HP and 315 Nm of maximum torque. It is a powertrain group that promises fuel consumption and emissions below 1.0, better performance than 1.5 (with a 0-100 km/h of just 7.8 seconds) and higher torque than diesel. & Egrave; satisfying to drive, with a full-bodied thrust and the revised e-CVT system cancels the annoying scooter effect of continuously variable gearboxes. So it is, also simulated the presence of ratios, acting on the engine revolutions, without letting us notice a system substantially devoid of gears and clutches.

It also updates dynamically. The most important platform rigid of the past offers a better driving dynamics , with suspensions now able to support better from the lateral yaw, without compromising the management of holes and bumps. The soundproofing & egrave; truly praiseworthy, perhaps the best on the market, capable of completely masking the activation of the internal combustion engine, making its presence felt only in case of strong accelerations. The containment of aerodynamic noises is also excellent.

I also really appreciated the sensitivity & agrave; of the braking system , really direct and devoid of the annoying spongy feeling, typical of hybrid cars. By the way, regenerative braking is; available on three levels, selectable with the paddles behind the steering wheel. Praise also the steering , fast, full-bodied and capable of instilling a lot of safety even at high speeds.

CONSUMPTION I think this is probably one of the best full hybrid architectures I have tried to date. In urban areas, the heat engine is activated intermittently to recharge the battery that powers the electric motors. It becomes so a half electric car, capable of reaching averages of about 24 or 25 km/l, exploiting the efficient regeneration of energy. In the suburban area , in addition to traveling with high acoustic comfort, it stabilizes the ride on 19 or 20 km/l , while on the motorway , when the speeds they go up, it works mainly with the 2.0 petrol engine, with averages of 15 km/l .
