Weekend viewing tips: Loot, It's Party Outside, Doctor Strange and more

We hardly watch traditional TV anymore. Streaming video services like Apple TV+ (try for free), Netflix, Disney+ and Amazon Prime Video are more important than ever. But local providers such as Videoland, CineMember and Ziggo also have plenty to offer. More series are added every week and it is nice if you know which series, films and documentaries really stand out. We have therefore made a selection.

New on Apple TV+: Loot

If you've never heard of Maya Rudolph, you might be wondering why she landed the lead role in this Apple TV+ series. She plays an older woman who at first glance does not immediately look like a typical influencer and trophy wife with puffy lips and an entourage of personal assistants. But it soon becomes clear why Apple chose Rudolph: she is a sought-after comedian in her own country and her funny acting makes you want to keep watching after the first episodes.

Maya Rudolph plays Molly Novak, a divorcée of a tech billionaire, played by Adam Scott (who we already know as the protagonist of the Apple TV+ series Severance – which gives an alienating impression). When Molly finds out her husband has cheated on her, she files for divorce and gets $87 billion. We see how Molly goes to work to do something with the money through her own charitable foundation. The first three episodes can be seen now and the rest will follow each week on Friday.

If you like comedy, you can also watch the third season of Trying on Apple TV+ in a few weeks. And those who are more into prison drama can already look forward to Black Bird, which can be seen from 6 July.

Chloe (S01)

On display at: Amazon Prime Video

Becky still lives with her mother and works as a temp. She compares herself to the perfect lives on Instagram and compulsively goes back to one account: Chloe's (Gilbert's). Becky obsessively watches her seemingly flawless life via social media. But when Chloe dies suddenly, Becky's need to figure out how and why leads to taking on a new identity and an “coincidental” encounters Chloe's best friend, Livia (Bennett-Warner), and infiltrates Chloe's group of close friends. Her alter-ego Sasha makes Becky a powerful, transgressive heroine; a popular, well-connected “someone” with a life, and loves, that are far more exciting and addictive than the “nobody” which she is like Becky. However, the pretense soon clouds and confuses reality, and Becky threatens to lose herself completely in the game she's playing.
