Carglass organized a nationwide structured collection of damaged windshields for their recycling. It is the first company in its sector in Italy to have conceived this project. Thanks to the collaboration with Eurovetro Recycling , the replaced windscreens are periodically collected from the Carglass centers present throughout the Italian territory.

The windscreens are then recycled to be transformed into new raw materials that the glass industry can use to make different types of products. It is therefore a virtuous circular economy project that transforms waste into a precious resource.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

When the windshield cannot be repaired, it is taken by Eurovetro Recycling to be recycled. According to what has been reported, over 80% of the entire windshield, the one made of glass, is recycled. The remaining part is made up of PVB, the safety material placed between the two layers of glass which prevents the glass from shattering into small pieces in the event of the crystal breaking, is; 85% recovered.

Once collected, the glass is processed through a proprietary technology to be brought to the state of granulate or sand with controlled parameters in terms of fire loss, grain size, humidity. This product is ready to be melted in the glass industry in order to create new glass-based products.

How is this recycling program doing? Carglass says that in 2021 an equivalent of 2,500,000 bottles were produced with the glass of the windscreens from Italian Carglass centers. Overall, we are talking about 2,125 tons of windscreens that have made it possible to obtain 1,800 tons of 100% recycled glass.

Furthermore, for every 10% more of recycled glass used to produce glass products, 2.5% of the fusion energy necessary to produce the products themselves with virgin raw materials is saved. Therefore, thanks to the Carglass recycling program, in 2021 there is; was a saving of 1,044 tons of CO2 in the glass melting process. Fabio Felisi , General Manager of Belron Italia, commented:

For several years now Carglass has been following this project together with Eurovetro Recycling, structuring and systematizing l & rsquo; entire process and creating a model of excellence for the virtuous recovery of our main waste material. We decided to celebrate 2022, declared by the UN as the “ International Year of Glass '', with the creation of a bottle of pure water born with the contribution of glass recycled from our windshields and the display of information material in all our centers, to generate greater awareness of the importance of glass recycling and make our customers aware of the green journey of our windshields.
