CATL & egrave; one of the most important producers of batteries for electric cars and among its customers there are realities; like Tesla and Mercedes. The Chinese company announced the third generation of its batteries featuring cell-to-pack technology . CATL estimates a range of 1,000 km for these batteries. Production and market launch are scheduled for 2023.

DOES IT INCREASE DENSIT? ENERGY

According to reports, the battery, called Qilin (name of a legendary creature from Chinese mythology), has a 72% volume usage efficiency. That is, 72% of the accumulator ready for installation is full of cells. By way of comparison, when CATL introduced the first generation of its cell-to-pack battery, the efficiency in terms of volume usage was 50%.

Pi & ugrave; in detail, the density energy increases to 255 Wh/kg with NCM type cells and 160 Wh/kg with new generation LFP cells. These results are the result of a new construction method that has made it possible to improve the management of spaces, allowing for a 6% increase in density; energy.

In addition, the new battery has a new and advanced liquid cooling system of the cells which, in addition to taking up less space, increases the heat exchange area by four times. Thanks to this improved thermal management, the new CATL batteries will be able to better manage high-power recharges. CATL generically promises a time of 10 minutes to go from 10 to 80% of the capacity; accumulator.

In addition to the higher density of energy, cell-to-pack batteries are even more simple to build. Not being present the modules & egrave; It is possible to eliminate the additional wiring and use the additional space to insert additional cells to the advantage of density; energy.

The company & agrave; Chinese did not want to mention the customers who will receive these new accumulators. According to Automotive News Europe, however, the first to receive these batteries will be Chinese startups Li Auto and Hozon New Energy Automobile. However, cannot be; do not immediately think of Tesla that uses CATL LFP batteries which currently have a density; energy of 125 Wh/kg. If the American manufacturer decides to use CATL's new cell-to-pack batteries with LFP cells, it could come to offer accumulators with a density; much higher energy.
