As 9to5Google reports, Google is scheduled to release a new mesh WiFi system later this year. After a smart speaker with Google Assistant moved into the access point with the second generation of the Google Nest WiFi (test), the new system should tie in with the simplicity of the first generation (test).

Return to identical access points

In addition, the third-generation Google Nest WiFi is to be updated to Wi-Fi 6 for the radio standard, the second generation offers dual-band WiFi with 2.4 and 5 GHz according to Wi-Fi 5, with the router WiFi-AC with 4×4 MU-MIMO with a cumulative 2,200 Mbit/s, but the access point with 2×2 MU-MIMO only enables a maximum of 1,200 Mbit/s in total from the 2.4 and 5 GHz band. In addition, the access point with Google Assistant lacks any LAN connections, which is a step backwards compared to the first generation. With the first generation, on the other hand, all mesh access points are technically absolutely identical and it doesn't matter which router establishes the connection to the Internet. According to rumours, the next generation will follow this principle again.

Want Smart Speaker and Wi-Fi 6E?

As before, Google should again offer the mesh WLAN system as a single device, in a pack of 2 and as a set of 3. It is not yet certain whether the function of the smart speaker with Google Assistant will be retained in the third generation or will be discontinued. In addition, the new system could only be based on Wi-Fi 6 and not on the latest WLAN standard Wi-Fi 6E with an additional, exclusive frequency band at 6 GHz for less interference – however, reliable information on this is still missing. However, this would correspond to the approach of the previous systems, not to offer the latest technology and not the fastest transfer rate, but to be able to offer a system that makes sense for as many buyers as possible at a lower price.

Different colors, announcement in autumn

In order to be integrated unobtrusively into the everyday life of users, the 3rd generation of Nest WiFi It will be available in a variety of colors to match the rest of Google's hardware portfolio due out later this year. According to the previous release dates of Google's mesh WLAN systems, the new model could be officially presented together with the final announcement of the Google Pixel 7 Pro in autumn.
