Notifications in iOS 16 are getting an overhaul
The iPhone has been showing you notifications in a fairly similar way for years, but from iOS 16 there are real changes coming. This gives you more space for other things on your iOS 16 lock screen, among other things.
- Customize lock screen display
- Changed animation for Notification Center
- Live notifications< /li>
- Web push
#1 Control the display of notifications
From iOS 16 you are in control of how you want to display your received notifications. This way you can choose to get more rest and see more of your wallpaper. You can choose from simply showing the number of notifications, a stack of the most recent notifications, or the classic list of all notifications. You can control this in your iPhone's settings.
From left to right: Quantity, Stack, List
This feature is nice for people who get a lot of notifications and don't always want to see a whole list as soon as they grab their iPhone. It's good to know that you can always just view your notifications, regardless of your choice. If you choose to show the number of notifications, tap the number to display the list.
#2 Notifications now come from below
Whichever view you choose above, one thing is certain: the notifications on your lock screen now have a new animation. They now come from below instead of above. This creates a clearer separation between your notifications and the new lock screen widgets in iOS 16. In the stack view, you can see up to 3 notifications. By swiping up on the stack, you can see everything in the Notification Center. That's the new name of Notification Center.

#3 Live notifications are continuously updated with new information
A way for developers to send live notifications is coming later this year. In its example, Apple uses a live notification from Uber, in which you can see from the notification whether the taxi is already there. We already envision a way in which, for example, the Thuisbezorgd app shows where the food is. Or the NS app that quickly shows with a progress bar whether you are almost at your destination.
This function is not yet available for developers. Apple says it will come later in 2022. That will probably come with iOS 16.1 or iOS 16.2.
#4 Notifications from websites now also on the iPhone and iPad
A long-awaited feature is finally coming to iPhone and iPad. Web push notifications also allow you to receive notifications from websites on these devices. On the Mac, this has been possible for years. For example, you can set up notifications for the iCulture website on your Mac. If a website does not have an associated app, you can still receive push notifications this way. Support for this varies per website.
