The open-source desktop KDE Plasma 5.25 is intended to contribute to an even better user experience (UX) under Linux with a new look for its UI. Other accent colors and an optional floating panel as an alternative to the “task bar” of KDE Plasma should ensure this.
KDE Plasma is still getting better customizable
Based on the latest KDE Framework 5.95 and the cross-platform free GUI toolkit Qt in version 5.15.3, the developers of the KDE community supported by KDE e.V. have released a new version of their free desktop. KDE Plasma 5.25 continues to follow the path already taken by KDE Plasma 5.24 LTS, but sets completely new visual accents.
A floating panel
The new “Floating Panel”, a new optional view for the KDE counterpart to the Windows taskbar, catches the eye. In this style, however, the panel is more like a dock like macOS has.
Adaptive accent colors
The new adaptive accent colors and plasma themes, which are even easier to customize, put the graphical user interface (GUI) at the center of the release.
More overview and new ones Gestures
The full-screen overview page introduced in February this year with KDE Plasma 5.24 LTS can now display virtual desktops in addition to open windows and running applications. From here, open windows can also be dragged directly onto virtual desktops. Also on board are new gestures.
In the background, the Plasma Addons and the KDE Store Discover as well as the free display server protocol Wayland and the window manager and Wayland Compositor KWin a product maintenance and minor updates.
Try KDE Plasma with KDE neon
The easiest way to try out KDE Plasma 5.25 is with KDE neon, an in-house Ubuntu derivative of its own community, which is intended in particular to showcase the advantages of KDE Plasma with the latest packages.
