Turbine Potsdam will challenge German champions VfL Wolfsburg in the women's DFB Cup final this Saturday in Cologne. The statistics speak for the “wolves”.

Wolfsburg with Lisa Weiß ( l.) and Potsdam with Isabel Kerschowski (r.) reach for the DFB Cup in Cologne

Starting position:

After winning the German championship title, VfL Wolfsburg has the chance to take part to make the double perfect by beating Turbine Potsdam in the cup final. The treble was even possible in March, but the team failed in the semi-finals of the Champions League at FC Barcelona.

It would be the ninth DFB Cup triumph for the “wolves”, who would draw level with record winners 1. FFC Frankfurt. The women of Wolfsburg already have another record and could extend it: that of the most cup wins in a row. They have won the “pot” for the past seven years. For goalkeeper Almuth Schult, the final in Cologne (kick-off 4:45 p.m. CEST) is her last game for VfL. The 31-year-old national goalkeeper is moving to the US club Angel City in Los Angeles for the new season.

1. FFC Turbine Potsdam last won the title ten years ago: in 2012 the women from Potsdam became German champions. The team's last cup triumph dates back to 2006. Turbine then made it to the final four times, but lost out each time. Sofian Chahed's team finished the past season in fourth place. In the final, the coach has to do without the best Turbine goalscorer of the season: Selina Cerci tore a cruciate ligament in March. Her failure “of course hurts a lot,” said Chahed.

Voices:

Tommy Stroot (coach of VfL Wolfsburg):“The cup final in Cologne is a highlight for women's football and for everyone involved. We expect a close game. We will have to invest a lot to maybe end to leave the pitch as the winner.”

Sofian Chahed (Turbine Potsdam coach): “We don't want to park the bus in goal, we want to play boldly forward. It's no use putting ourselves in the back for 90 minutes. We have to find a healthy mix.”

In the Bundesliga this season, the “wolves” beat Potsdam twice 3-0

Svenja Huth ( Captain of VfL Wolfsburg): “Nothing comes easy. It's hard work every time. And we will give everything.”

Sara Agrez (Captain of Turbine Potsdam): “We've prepared well. We have nothing to lose.”

Statistics:

Wolfsburg are clear favourites, while Potsdam are outsiders. VfL has won the last 39 DFB Cup games in a row. The two teams faced each other twice in the cup final in Cologne, and Wolfsburg won both times: 2013 3-2 and 2015 3-0.

Potsdam still leads the Bundesliga by 19:16 for both teams Wins in three draws. In the past season, however, Wolfsburg won both duels 3-0.
