Sony and Microsoft are said to be looking to stage their next “facelift” gaming consoles as “next-gen” for 8K/UHD gaming thanks to RDNA-3 GPUs, Polish website PPE reports .pl, which also published images and slides from a press conference held by the Chinese electronics group TCL in Poland.

Facelift or already next-gen?< /h2>

As the Chinese company, which generated almost 14 billion US dollars in 2021 with around 75,000 employees and, according to its CEO Li Dongsheng, will once represent “the Chinese Sony or Samsung”, revealed in a presentation to industry representatives, the “upgrades” of the PlayStation 5 (test) and Xbox Series X (test) can access GPU performance at the level of AMD's upcoming graphics card generation.

Radeon RX 7700 XT performance

No less than that is expected according to TLC Performance of the upcoming AMD Radeon RX 7700 XT, which is attributed up to 10,240 ALUs based on the RDNA 3 GPU Navi 32 designed as multi-chip modules.

  • Sony PlayStation 5 Pro
  • New Microsoft Xbox Series X and S
  • Rendering in 4K/2160p with 60 – 120 FPS
  • Playback in 8K/4320p with 60 – 120 FPS
  • Performance class of a Radeon RX 7700 XT

*) not official confirmed!

Even if the upcoming game consoles can fall back on the performance of a custom APU with an RDNA 3 GPU and thus play games calculated internally with 4K in 8K, it is less a next-gen because the platform is the same and the games are the same will also run on the regular PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. In terms of performance, however, the “new” consoles would increase significantly.

TCL expects the game console refreshment to be released between 2023 and 2024, during which time neither Sony nor Microsoft have said a word about a “Pro” console or a “facelift” of the current generation. The new game consoles are said to be classified as “Gen 9.5”.

FSR and FSR 2.0 will be in demand

In order to be able to output such high resolutions, the new game consoles would have to use upsampling technologies such as AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution or AMD FSR 2.0.

For the current Xbox Series X|S, the FSR 2.0 SDK and related resources are already available for developers, games that support the temporal upscaling of the 2nd generation are currently not in sight.

However, Sony has not yet commented on the support of FSR 2.0 on the PlayStation 5. All of the information mentioned so far is therefore still to be understood as rumors for the time being and should be treated with great caution.
