Update to Windows 11: Sun Valley for all and Sun Valley 2 nearing RTM status

While Microsoft is now providing the update to Windows 11 21H2 (“Sun Valley”) for all eligible – i.e. compatible – computer systems, the development work is also coming up Windows 11 22H2 (“Sun Valley 2”) almost complete and the transition to final RTM status is imminent.

Windows 11 21H2 for everyone

As Microsoft announced in the updated documentation on docs.microsoft.com, the initial update of Windows 10 to Windows 11 now offered on all eligible systems that have at least the May 2020 Update aka Windows 10 2004 (“20H1”) installed and fully meet the system requirements of the latest operating system.

For the first time, the update or upgrade path is officially available to companies and is automatically offered on all relevant systems. Microsoft now speaks of a “broad deployment” of the operating system “on all authorized systems”.

The update to Windows 11 21H2 officially requires the following framework conditions, some of which can (still) be avoided with different workarounds.

  • Windows 10 2004 (“20H1”) or higher
  • active TPM 2.0 or fTPM 2.0
  • activated Secure Boot in UEFI
  • on compatible processor

However, Microsoft has already announced several times that the requirements when changing to the next higher feature update should be taken into account more strictly. The workarounds could come to an end with the autumn 2022 update alias Windows 11 22H2 (“Sun Valley 2”) at the latest – but that's not absolutely ready yet.

Windows 11 22H2 shortly before RTM status

While Windows 11 21H2 is available as an update for all eligible systems, the website Deskmodder claims to have learned that the autumn 2022 update, which brings the operating system up to the level of Windows 11 22H2, is about to be officially completed and is already between the On May 20th and 24th, Microsoft is scheduled to start distributing Windows 11 22H2 later this summer , with broad availability planned for this fall.

After Windows 11 22H2 has reached RTM status, Windows 11 Insiders will see the new Insider Preview Builds for the Windows 11 23H2 feature update planned for next year for the first time.

First insider previews of Windows 11 23H2

In the meantime, Microsoft has already published the first two insider previews for Windows 11 23H2, in which the developers take the insiders on the journey to the autumn 2023 update and are listed as build 25xxx.

On May 18, Microsoft released Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 25120, which is also available as a system image (ISO). Among other things, the “Interactive Content” is new, with which, for example, the search bar can be placed on the desktop surface.

Windows 11 Build 22621 as RTM candidate< /h2>

Meanwhile, it is becoming increasingly clear that the Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 22621.1, which was released on May 11th both as an update for Insiders in the Beta Channel and as a system image (ISO ) was published, could be a first candidate for the final RTM status of Windows 11 22H2.
