New enterprise SSDs are among the many mass storage products that Western Digital is introducing these days. The DC SN650 series uses PCIe 4.0 and delivers up to 15.36 TB in U.3 format and 30 cm E1.L form factor.

Even if details such as specific performance data are still missing, it is clear that the change from PCIe 3.1 in the DC SN640 to PCIe 4.0 in the DC SN650 will also increase performance. In addition, a newer TLC NAND flash memory from the BiCS5 generation is used, which makes its contribution to higher transfer rates.

As with the predecessor, the SSDs are in the 2nd .5-inch housing (U.2/U.3) and the most striking of the new Enterprise & Data center storage form factors (EDSFF): The E1.L format, which was first implemented by Intel as a product, is reminiscent of a ruler at around 32 cm long and 3.8 cm wide and is therefore known as the “Ruler” format.

< figure class="text-asset">E1.L (long) E1.S (short) E3.L (long) E3.S (short) Length 318.75mm 111.49mm 142.2mm 104.9mm Width 38.4mm 31.5mm 76mm thickness 9.5mm (up to 25w)

In both form factors, the DC SN650 with a maximum of 15.36 TB, which is now standard in the industry. Controller and firmware are also from Western Digital.

The DC SN650 is currently being sampled. Regular deliveries are scheduled to begin in the second half of the year. In general, the SSDs in data centers should ensure fast transfers and high storage density.
