GeForce RTX 3000 LHR: NiceHash & NBMiner bypass Nvidia's Mining Brake 2.0

As the network provider NiceHash announced on its blog, the mining app “Quick Miner” developed under the code name “Excavator” makes it possible for the first time ever to use the mining brake 2.0 of the LHR – completely bypass graphics cards from the GeForce series from Nvidia.

Even the 2nd mining brake doesn't stand up

In order to be able to exploit the full potential of a graphics card with Light Hash Rate (“LHR”) when mining, the NiceHash “Quick Miner” in the latest and already well advanced preview version 0.5.4.0 RC, i.e. the current release candidate of the app, provided.

We are pleased to announce that the NiceHash Quick Miner (“Excavator”), the first mining software that fully (100%) unlocks LHR graphics cards!

A current GeForce RTX 3080 Ti (test), which already has a mining brake 2.0 (“LHR”) from the release and actually reaches a maximum of 60 to 80 MH/s when slowed down in this way, should be good for up to 120 MH/s with NiceHash Quick Miner 0.5.4.0.

The Polish website Benchmark.pl actually certifies a constant hash rate of 117 MH/s for an overclocked and efficiency-optimized GeForce RTX 3080 Ti after the update.

In both cases, the optimized GeForce RTX 3080 Ti is around 120 MH/s and a power consumption of 280 to 290 watts, which leads to a significantly improved efficiency of the LHR graphics cards when “mining” Ethereum.

Possible consequences for players too

Bypassing the mining brake again could also have a negative impact on the DIY market in the form of rising prices and poorer availability and thus negatively impact players. After GeForce and Radeon were getting closer and closer to the RRP, an increased demand for Ampere could cause the prices to rise a little again.

But the players are already slowly preparing anyway on the GPU duel Radeon RX 7000 vs. GeForce RTX 4000.

The developers have more information about the new version of NiceHash “Quick Miner” on the official NiceHash blog summarized.

Update 05/09/2022 10:36 am

The NBMiner v41.0, which is available for Windows and Linux, can also leverage Nvidia's LHR brake 100 percent. The GeForce 512.15 (Windows) and GeForce 510.60 (Linux) drivers were tested by the developer. However, the bypass obviously does not work completely without problems: Users who encounter problems should not only make sure to use one of the drivers mentioned, but also lower the graphics memory clock by 100 to 200 MHz compared to the clock last used.
