Portable SSD T7 Shield in the test: Samsung's robust opponent for the SanDisk Extreme

Samsung sometimes lets its external SSDs outside. The T7 Shield is similarly compact as the T7 (Touch) and offers the same technology with up to 1,050 MB/s. A new feature is the rubberized housing with IP65 certification, which offers better protection against dust, shock and water.

Samsung's first outdoor SSD< /h2>

The T7 Shield is Samsung's first outdoor SSD. For this, its housing is coated with rubber, which offers protection against scratches when falling on hard ground (stone). The purely electronic SSD technology withstands shocks very well compared to mechanical hard drives.

Certified according to protection class IP65, the SSD is also dustproof and protected against the ingress of water jets. According to Samsung, the T7 Shield had to pass the following test conditions for certification without damage:

  • IPX5 test conditions : The device was exposed to fresh water sprayed from a nozzle (Ø 6.3 mm) at a distance of 3 m at 12.5 l/min for 3 minutes.
  • IP6X test conditions: The device was rated 8 Exposed to 2 kg/m³ of moving dust at a pressure below 2 kPa for hours in a vacuum chamber.

However, this does not mean that there is no guarantee just in case: “Damage caused by liquids and dust is not covered by the guarantee,” Samsung writes in a footnote.

The SSD is said to have passed the unspecified drop test from “up to 3 meters in height”. But there is no guarantee here either: “Damage caused by falling is not covered by the guarantee.”

Anyone who is out and about with the T7 Shield need hardly worry if the device falls down on their outdoor adventures. Even a rain shower during the photo safari or dust and sand in the workshop or on the construction site are no problem.

With dimensions of 88 × 13 × 59 mm, the T7 Shield is only marginally longer and wider than the T7 (Touch), but at least 5 mm thicker. The weight increases even more: 98 g means 40 g more than the T7 (Touch).

The connection is again made via a cable with a USB-C connector. For wider compatibility, Samsung includes two cables with connector type USB-C or USB-A on the other end.

As usual, there are few details from the manufacturer about the built-in technology. When asked, however, the editors were confirmed that it is the same technical basis as the other T7 models. Inside is an NVMe SSD with 3D TLC NAND, which communicates externally via USB 3.2 Gen 2 with a gross data rate of 10 Gbit/s or a slower USB standard. If the host computer supports the maximum speed, then at least in synthetic benchmarks up to 1,050 MB/s should be achieved.

As usual, AES data encryption with 256 bits is supported. The guarantee period is three years. Unlike the manufacturer's internal SSDs, there is no guaranteed write volume (TBW) limitation.

Prices and Availability

The T7 Shield is available today in black, beige and blue colors and with 1 TB and 2 TB storage capacities. The recommended retail prices are around 150 euros and 280 euros. Experience has shown that Samsung's retail prices are significantly undercut after a certain amount of time.

They have to, because the SanDisk Extreme Portable V2 is in the same drawer and is available from 120 euros (1 TB), 210 euros (2 TB) and 450 euros (4 TB). It is a bit longer, but also a bit slimmer and achieves similarly high transfer rates. However, the IP55 certification is one level below that of the Samsung T7 Shield: The “5” as the first digit stands for “protected against dust in harmful quantities”, while the “6” is equivalent to “dustproof”. SanDisk does not offer encryption, but the warranty period is longer than five years.

Benchmarks

< p class="p text-width">With around 720 MB/s, the T7 Shield reads the data in the practical copy test and is therefore significantly faster than the Crucial X6, but somewhat slower than the new edition of the SanDisk Extreme, which also speeds up the games folder duplicated. The SanDisk SSD is even 65 percent faster in PCMark. A good 1,000 MB/s are possible for both test subjects in the synthetic CrystalDiskMark.

    The practical write test in Windows -Explorer delivers a sustained write rate of 540 MB/s with an empty SSD. At 50 percent fill level, a clear drop can be measured. At 80 percent, performance is back to normal. The cause is still unclear. Either way, the performance remains high, there is no dip like with the Crucial X6 (test) with QLC-NAND to well below 100 MB/s.

    The T7 Shield is a compact and robust on-the-go SSD that outperforms many USB 3.0 and some internal SATA SSDs. In a direct duel against the outdoor competitor SanDisk Extreme, however, the T7 Shield is at a disadvantage in terms of performance. The new edition V2 from SanDisk is faster and overall more compact. Samsung offers data encryption for this, and the SanDisk SSD in turn has a longer guarantee. If you want it even faster, you can use the SanDisk Extreme Pro V2 with up to 2 GB/s on the USB 3.2 2×2 port, which is still much less common. Alternatively, Samsung offers the Portable SSD X5 (test) for Thunderbolt. Both alternatives are more expensive.

    It remains to be seen where the prices of the Samsung T7 Shield will level off in online retail. The SanDisk Extreme V2 is currently also clearly ahead of the curve when it comes to price when Samsung's RRP is consulted.
