Sales figures: iPhone 13 best-selling, iPhone 13 mini struggling

Small device still not very popular

Independent statistics already showed that the iPhone 12 mini is not doing well in the sales figures. Yet Apple still came up with a successor, in the form of an iPhone 13 mini. That one is also barely over the counter. We are talking here about figures from Consumer Research Intelligence Partners (CIRP) for the American market, which can give a fairly good indication of how the relations are in Europe. Apple itself does not release figures on which devices have sold the best.

Consumers are buying more new devices

Despite the low interest in the iPhone 13 mini, Apple has nothing to complain about the sales figures of the iPhone 13 family. The standard model iPhone 13 is the most popular model at the moment. And the Pro models also score relatively well compared to previous years. While people used to opt for a device from a generation earlier, they now more often use the latest model.

Last year, the iPhone 12 family accounted for 61 percent of total iPhone sales, now the iPhone 13 family accounts for 71 percent. The standard 6.1-inch takes the largest share of 38 percent, while the iPhone Pro models divide the rest. The iPhone 13 mini's numbers are negligible.

Among the older models, the iPhone 11, iPhone SE 2020 and the three-year-old iPhone XR are doing well. They accounted for 15% of sales in the past quarter. The iPhone SE 2022 hardly counted, because it was only available for a short time in the aforementioned quarter.

Users replace their iPhone faster

According to CIRP, the iPhone 13 models are doing so well because people are replacing their existing device more often. For years, users took longer to use their device, but that period is decreasing. In the past quarter, 20% of buyers spent more than three years with the device, compared to 34% a year earlier. And currently 47% takes less than two years with a device, compared to 35% previously.

Obviously, that's not good for the environment, so we hope these people choose to recycle or resell. One thing is certain: people are not waiting for an ultra-compact device that is still available for a considerable amount in the store. Those looking for a smaller device should opt for the affordable iPhone SE.

With the arrival of the iPhone 14, Apple seems to have learned from the numbers. A 5.4-inch iPhone 14 mini is no longer planned, but instead there will be a 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Max for people who are looking for a slightly larger device. In addition, there are again the usual Pro models in 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch.

Below you see the prices for the iPhone 13. On each tab you will find a different storage capacity, because that can make a significant difference in price.
