Earlier this year, Apple hosted the Shot on iPhone Macro Photo Challenge. In this (almost) annual challenge it is up to iPhone users to take the most beautiful photos. In recent months, many iPhone users have sent in their entries and the jury, which consisted of various experts in the field of photography, selected ten winners from the many applications. Unfortunately, there is no Dutch winner this year.

Winners Shot on iPhone Macro Challenge

All winners have one thing in common: in the photos, small objects are enlarged and can be admired in the smallest detail. That is an important characteristic of macro photography and the demands of the challenge. Among the winners we see a lot of flowers and plants, but also (parts of) animals. The most unique photo is that of sea glass, taken by Guido Cassanelli from Argentina. Sea glass is glass that has washed up on beaches and has been damaged by weathering, giving it a unique structure. The jury was particularly impressed by the use of color and how something so small can be photographed so large.

Another beautiful statue is of Prajwal Chougule from India. He claims to be a nature lover and photographed the dewdrops on a spider's web during the golden hour. According to the jury, the drops on the spider web resemble small pearls and the image is so perfect that it resembles an illustration. The way the background has been incorporated into the image also receives praise from the jury.

The third winner we would like to highlight is from the US. In the photo, taken by Ashley Lee, we see a whole strawberry in a glass of soda. Because of the prick in the drink, the bubbles cling to the strawberry, which gives a nice effect. There is movement in the photo and in combination with the color of the strawberry this creates a beautiful picture, according to the jury. According to the jury, it is one of the most creative applications of macro photography.

The other seven winners, which mainly show flowers and plants, can be found on the Apple website. The other winners come from the US, China, Thailand, Hungary and Italy. In the coming weeks you will see the images on Apple's social media channels such as Instagram and in exhibitions in, for example, the Apple Stores. The winning photographers receive a so-called licensing fee for the use of the images. Also read our tip on how to take macro photos with the iPhone.
