Mac Studio teardown: SSD upgrade seems to be doing well

Mac Studio teardown

The housing is apparently not that easy to open, as it turned out earlier. But there are screws under the rubber ring at the bottom. If you remove the bottom, there are even more screws to loosen the power supply. What is striking is that many parts are not made of plastic but of aluminum. “This is a lot more complex than I expected,” said YouTuber Max Tech. He looked at the Mac Studio with M1 Ultra and found two ports inside to expand the SSD. The Mac Studio includes two SSD ports that are easily accessible, just like the Mac Pro.

Apple: ‘Don't do it yourself’
Apple itself says on the website that the storage is not accessible to users and that you should immediately choose the desired capacity when purchasing. But that is perhaps a matter of expectation management, to make it clear that as a normal user you cannot just put an extra SSD in it. Apple could offer SSD upgrades at a later date, for example through partners.

For the modular Mac Pro, Apple sells an SSD Upgrade Kit, which you can put in yourself. An expansion with 1TB will cost you €690,- and for the ultimate expansion of 8TB you will pay €3,220.-. But then we are talking about a device that can be adjusted by the user. This does not seem to be the intention with the Mac Studio.

The memory of the Mac Studio cannot be upgraded, because it is soldered to the chip. This is unified memory, which is shared by the CPU and GPU. If you want to know more, be sure to watch the video because not everyone will currently have a Mac Studio on their desk to try it all out for themselves.
