In November 2021, Kawasaki, Subaru, Toyota, Mazda and Yamaha announced their commitment to develop alternative fuel solutions for combustion engines internal. In particular, Yamaha had made it known that it was working on the development of a hydrogen-powered engine for Toyota . Now, more interesting news arrives; about this project. In particular, some technical information was revealed.

Yoshihiro Hidaka , president of Yamaha Motor, commented:

Hydrogen thrusters have all the potential; to be carbon neutral, while honoring our passion for the internal combustion engine. Collaborate with companies with different cultures and skills and increase the number of our partners & egrave; how we intend to be present in the world of tomorrow.

V8 FROM LEXUS ORIGIN

The hydrogen-powered engine that Yamaha is developing for Toyota & egrave; a 5-liter V8 . This is the unit & agrave; used on the Lexus RC F . According to Yamaha, modifications have been made to the injectors, cylinder heads, intake manifold and more to adapt it to the new fuel system. The result is; an engine capable of delivering power up to 450 HP at 6,800 rpm, against a maximum torque of 540 Nm at 3,600 rpm.

Is not serious; clear if and when this engine will find & agrave; never placed under the hood of a Toyota Group car. However, for Yamaha hydrogen brings several advantages and should not be seen as a simple substitute for gasoline. There are good odds; that this particular engine is not the last of its kind. Gi & agrave; we know, for example, that Yamaha and Kawasaki are working on a unit & agrave; equipped with this technology for the world of two wheels.

The goal of all these companies is; obviously that of to keep alive the pi & ugrave; traditional motors for a long time finding new (cleaner) systems to power them. We will see how these projects evolve but with electrification advancing rapidly and with the various hydrogen-based technologies that do not seem to find great support except in restricted areas (such as in the heavy transport sector), it seems difficult that these engines can find widespread use.

A feature highlighted by Yamaha is; that the sound of the V8 engine can & ograve; be preserved even with hydrogen power. Is not serious; however the first time that the two companies collaborate together in the development of an engine. Yamaha, for example, has collaborated on the V10 of the Lexus LFA.
