The reduction of stress reactions in those who feel their partner's body odor has long been known.

But researchers have now investigated the connection between odor function, sexual well-being and infidelity.

They found that those who describe themselves as having a good ability to smell are also reporting higher levels of sexual well-being and lower levels of infidelity.

– This could be due to the fact that those who have a better sense of smell as well is more present in the relationship and picks up signs from his partner, says researcher Anna Blomkvist at Stockholm University in a mailing.

– Sex and cohabitation are not only behaviors that are affected by hearing, sight and touch, also the sense of smell affects, as a whole perception, she continues.

That smell affects intimate relationships could be important for those who have lost their sense of smell, for example due to covid-19.

Anna Blomkvist has together with a research colleague reviewed previous research on people who lost d elar of or the whole sense of smell and how their relationships have been affected.

– A lost sense of smell can affect close relationships, it can be about eating behaviors, social support and sexual behaviors. Family members and partners can then be a great support and act as an “external nose” to, for example, help assess the quality of leftover food or the like, she says.
