In macOS Monterey 12.2, Apple has made a number of improvements. There are also quite a few security vulnerabilities closed in iOS 15.3 and macOS Monterey 12.2. But it seems that an annoying bug has crept in as well. On Reddit, among others, there are complaints about a draining battery in the sleep mode of the MacBook. We have also received reports from users in the editorial office and experienced this problem ourselves.

‘Closed MacBook goes to sleep in macOS Monterey 12.2’

Users note that in sleep mode, i.e. when the lid is closed, the MacBook's battery drains unnoticed. The battery runs completely empty from 100% to 0%, so that the MacBook can no longer be used. Analysis of the Terminal shows that the Bluetooth accessories may be the culprits.

Connected Bluetooth accessories regularly wake the MacBook from sleep. It is not entirely clear why this requires so much battery, but it is clear that something is not quite right with some users. For example, iCulture reader Jaap says that his MacBook Air is completely drained during the night in sleep mode.

It is not clear whether only specific models are affected (Intel and/or Apple Silicon). We expect Apple to fix the issue in a future macOS update, possibly in macOS Monterey 12.2.1. Until then, there is also something you can do yourself to prevent this problem.

Turn off Bluetooth accessories

Want to make sure your MacBook doesn't go unnoticed. drains in sleep mode, turn off Bluetooth accessories just to be safe. If you use a Magic Mouse, Magic Keyboard or Magic Trackpad, you will find a switch on the back or bottom to turn them off. Other Bluetooth accessories from other brands also often have a switch to turn off Bluetooth.
