Big iMac (Pro) 2022 rumors

In 2021 Apple made a big impression with the iMac 2021. The new design appeals to many people and the improved performance thanks to Apple Silicon is also a big improvement. But fans of the larger iMac were left empty-handed. This year, if we are to believe the rumors, that will change. Apple is working on a new larger iMac for 2022. There have been all kinds of rumors about this iMac 2022 lately and in this article we summarize them for you. What do the sources say about the various aspects?

  • Name
  • Design
  • Screen
  • Specifications
  • Price
  • Release

#1 Name: iMac Pro or just iMac?

Previously, Apple released the iMac in two sizes: 21.5-inch and 27-inch. They were just two sizes for the same iMac, though each size had its own configurations. With the new model, that could just change. There are rumors that Apple will use the name iMac Pro for the new large iMac. That is mainly to indicate that this one is even more powerful. The name iMac Pro may already sound familiar to you. Apple used this name from 2017 to spring 2021, for the special space gray iMac with an extra powerful processor. There are sources that state that the name iMac Pro will return, precisely because it is an extra powerful model. Think of it as the MacBook Air vs MacBook Pro.

However, Apple could also simply choose the name iMac, which will then be available in two formats. Just like the MacBook Pro, which has a 13-, 14- and 16-inch version. The processors also differ from each other, despite the fact that the name is the same.

#2 Design of large iMac 2022

In terms of design of this new iMac 2022, Apple seems to be looking closely at last year's model and the Pro Display XDR. So you can expect narrower screen edges, a flatter display (so without the round convexity at the back) and a straight foot. Because the design is probably so thin, the headphone jack will probably also be on the side.

More interesting is what colors Apple will use. The iMac 2021 is characterized by the white screen edges and cheerful light colors. But according to sources, Apple is opting for a darker color scheme for the new large iMac. That probably means black (or at least dark) screen edges, with an aluminum housing in, for example, space gray, black or silver. Digitimes claims the iMac 2022 will come in ‘multiple colors’ will come, but which ones they are remains to be seen. Frankly, we don't think Apple will choose yellow or orange again.

#3 Screen large iMac Pro 2022

Much has already been said and written about the display of the large iMac Pro 2022. Initially, we assumed that Apple will opt for a larger format than the current 27-inch Intel iMac. Sizes like 30- or 32-inch seemed obvious. But display analyst Ross Young, who often knows how to share reliable information, once again opts for a 27-inch display. This means that there will be no jump in screen size, as was the case with the 21.5-inch iMac to the current 24-inch iMac 2021.

Other specs for the display are likely to include support for 120Hz ProMotion and mini-LED. Thanks to mini-LED, the resolution is high, black is much deeper black and other colors stand out more. Apple already uses this for the latest MacBook Pro models. Other techniques you can expect are True Tone and wide color reproduction. Incidentally, we suspect that the option for a nano-textured glass, which you can already opt for with the 27-inch iMac, is also a choice with the new model.

#4 iMac Pro 2022 specs and features

What we and the sources are sure of is that Apple is moving from Intel to its own Apple Silicon chip. Apple will probably opt for the M1 Pro and M1 Max chips, which you will also find in the 2021 MacBook Pro. But because the iMac doesn't rely on a battery and has more room for cooling, there would be an extra powerful option. A reliable rumored rumor talks about a 12-core CPU. With the current M1 Max chip, this is a maximum of a 10-core CPU.

Other specifications we expect are a minimum of 16GB RAM with 512GB storage (expandable to 32GB RAM and 8TB storage), an SD card slot, HDMI port (for connecting external displays), multiple USB-4/Thunderbolt 3 ports and an Ethernet port in the power adapter. You probably connect the power adapter to the iMac itself via a magnetic cable, just like with the 2021 model.

By the way, there have been previous rumors that Apple was considering Face ID for this larger iMac, but it seems like there's more is not going to happen. Instead, you use the Touch ID sensor on the included wireless Magic Keyboard. We also think that the accessories such as the keyboard, mouse and trackpad will also be available in matching colors again.

The front camera was already 1080p on the 27-inch iMac and it will probably remain so with this model. We'd like to see support for Center Stage here as well, but it hasn't made it to the Mac as of yet.

#5 Price of large iMac 2022

Rumors about the price of the new large iMac 2022 have not really been around yet. A well-known rumor says that the model will be available for a starting price of around €2,000. The current 27-inch iMac is available from &euro 1,999. But if we're honest, we think Apple is going a step further. A price from €2,199,- is therefore not inconceivable.

#6 Release larger 27-inch iMac

One of the biggest issues is when Apple is going to release this bigger iMac. Sources state that a release in the spring of 2022 is realistic. However, some sources still see challenges in the production and call a release around September the ‘worst scenario‘.

If Apple does release the new large iMac Pro of 2022 in the spring, an announcement in March or September at an event is logical timing. Apple also announced the 2021 iMac at the April event.
