Renault, Nissan and Mitsubishi appear to have plans to jointly invest over 20 billion euros in the next 5 years to develop electric vehicles together . This interesting news comes from a Reuters report adding that this development plan is expected to be announced Thursday. As the electric car market accelerates, the Franco-Japanese Alliance is looking for a way to make more use of its synergies. According to the report, by 2030 the Alliance should lead to more debut of 30 electric models through 5 shared platforms.

SYNERGIES TO REDUCE COSTS

Such platforms are expected to cover 90% of the electric vehicles that companies are expected to develop and launch by 2030. One of these is; the CMF-EV platform already; used on Nissan Ariya and Renault Megane E-Tech Electric. A second platform will be; used by Nissan, its Chinese market partner Dongfeng and Dacia to create low-cost, no-frills electric cars. There will also be two additional platforms that will be used to develop kei cars in Japan. Finally, by the half & agrave; of the decade will come a fifth platform developed by Renault and called CMFB-EV. Gi & agrave; we know it will be; used for the new Renault 5 but the report adds that Nissan will exploit it; to electrify the Micra .

Thanks to this joint work, the three members of the Alliance aim to make electric vehicles more compact; convenient , with a cost similar to that of endothermic models. In addition to the platforms, the three brands will share other key components such as batteries. The report adds that the Alliance plans to jointly invest in the capacity. to produce in France, Great Britain, China and Japan a total of 220 GWh of batteries by 2030 .

By standardizing and sharing batteries, the Alliance plans to halve production costs . The Alliance also plans to share solid-state battery technology that Nissan is developing. Reuters further adds that this plan had to be already in place; announced last fall but that following the evolution of the pandemic in Japan it & egrave; It has all been postponed to this week.

Interested parties do not receive comments on the Reuters report which, however, must always be taken with due caution, like all reports of this type. The news is; however extremely interesting given that it could open up new scenarios on the electric development front for the members of the Alliance. All that remains is to wait a few more days to find out more.
