In Gao, there are Swedish personnel belonging to the UN operation Minusma and the special forces operation Task Force Takuba.

Sweden contributes about 220 soldiers and officers to the UN operation Minusma, 150 to the multinational special unit operation Task Force Takuba and 8 officers to the EU: EUTM Mali training and education initiative.
