Domestic. Corona pandemic homework and isolation continue to attract dog purchases. Many chose to get a dog in 2020 – a trend that has also continued in 2021. More than 78,000 dogs were newly registered in the Swedish Board of Agriculture's dog register in 2021. An increase of 10.2 percent can also be seen in the Swedish Kennel Club's register.

In the Swedish Board of Agriculture's central dog register, where all dogs and their owners are required by law to register, there are now a total of 1,044,000 dogs and 756,000 owners registered. In total, the number of new registrations in the dog register was 78,000 in 2021. That is 25 percent more than in 2019 and 9 percent more than in 2020.

With 62,894 newly registered dogs, 2021 was a record year for the Swedish Kennel Club with the highest registration figures in almost 50 years and the second highest ever. Registration numbers of over 60,000 dogs have occurred periodically before, but to find higher numbers than this year, one must go back to 1973 when SKK registered 63,310 new dogs.

Luna is the most common name among this year's new registrations, and climbs up to place 16 as the most common dog name. However, Molly is still unthreatened number one and therefore the most common name for registered dogs in Sweden together with Bella and Charlie who hold second and third place on the list.

In the Swedish Kennel Club's statistics on new registrations, the Labrador Retriever is still by far the most popular dog breed, which after an increase of 28.5 percent in 2021 will deduct another 4,116 new registrations in 2021. This is the second highest figure ever for Labrador Retrievers, as in 1980. had 4,138 registrations.

Golden Retriever regained second place on the list from German German Shepherd, which is now in third place. Our Swedish national breed's greyhound increased by as much as 33 percent and holds a reassuring fourth place.

The dog breed australian stumpy tail cattle dog was registered for the first time in Sweden in 2021. There are now 358 breeds and breed variants in the Swedish Kennel Club's register.

Labrador retriever is, just like the last three years, the most common dog breed in the Swedish Board of Agriculture dog registers.
