The Gulf of Bothnia is almost completely covered in ice

Monday's location is clearly visible on the ice map from 10 January, where in the Gulf of Bothnia only a very small yet ice-free area can be seen at sea at the height of Skellefteå.

Otherwise, the ice is dense all the way down to Örnsköldsvik.

The winter 2010–2011 was the most severe in a very long time , already by Christmas 2010, the Gulf of Bothnia was completely covered in ice. It was preceded by an almost equally severe ice winter, in the 2009–2010 season the Gulf of Bothnia was completely covered by ice for the first time on 8 January. January, according to SMHI.

The comprehensive ice on the Gulf of Bothnia this January does not seem to be long-lasting, however. SMHI's forecast for the next two weeks says fresh winds, subdued cold and low pressure from the Atlantic. Later on, it remains to be seen whether the Gulf of Bothnia will be completely covered in ice again before spring makes its entrance.
