Looking ahead to 2022 In this article series, we look forward each week to Apple's new products for this coming year. We summarize weekly what you can expect in terms of the different product categories. From the latest rumors to predictions based on previous versions, this preview lets you know what to expect. This week is all about the Apple Watch.

#1 Apple Watch in 2022: which models can you expect?

This year we may be treated to not one or two but three new models. Apple has more often than not released multiple models at the same time, such as the Apple Watch Series 1 and Apple Watch Series 2 in 2016 and the Apple Watch Series 6 and Apple Watch SE in 2020. But three models have never been seen before. These are the models we expect:

  • Apple Watch Series 8
  • Apple Watch SE 2022
  • Apple Watch sports version (‘rugged’)< /li>

The Apple Watch Series 8 will be the logical successor to the current Apple Watch Series 7, while the Apple Watch SE 2022 will replace the Apple Watch SE. There seems to be a very good chance that these two models are coming in any case. We are most unsure about the ‘rugged’ Apple Watch sports version. There are rumors that Apple is coming with an extra robust and sturdy Apple Watch, especially intended for athletes and outdoor enthusiasts.

#2 Three models, three designs?

The fact that Apple is coming up with three different models may also have to do with the three different designs that Apple will use. Because the designs probably differ so much, we will discuss these separately for each model.

Apple Watch Series 8

It's going to be an exciting year for the Apple Watch. Last year there were plenty of rumors, both from reliable and less reliable sources, that the Apple Watch Series 7 would get a brand new design. Instead of the rounded sides, Apple would switch to flat sides and a larger screen. That larger screen did come, but we haven't heard anything about that new design yet. The sources claimed after the announcement that the design was really coming, but that in retrospect it would be the design of the Apple Watch Series 8. But is that really the case? We won't know until September.

This year this new design?

It has been quiet in terms of design in recent months. That's not surprising either, because rumor-eaters don't dare to burn their fingers. Nevertheless, a new one would certainly be welcome, because the design will be about four years old this September. Still, we wonder whether Apple would introduce a new design so quickly after a completely new screen came in last year.

Apple Watch SE 2022

For the Apple Watch SE In 2022 we do not expect any major changes in design. The design will likely remain identical to the current version. The SE line is known for that, even with the iPhone. Perhaps Apple will opt for a different color, but we prefer to see just space gray, silver and gold. Especially because the Apple Watch Series 7 lacks those colors.

Apple Watch sports version

What the sports version will look like is still a big question. Since there is talk of an extra robust version, we also think it looks a bit rougher. So slightly thicker and perhaps wider edges, possibly of slightly different material. We hope that this rugged Apple Watch will at least look better than the current Apple Watch with a sturdy case, because we honestly don't think that is a face.

Hopefully the ‘rugged’ Apple Watch looks nicer than this case.

#3 Display: will there be a third size?

The Apple Watch is always available in two different sizes, But that could just change this year. But for which model is still the question.

Apple Watch Series 8

Display expert Ross Young said last October that the Apple Watch Series 8 may come in three sizes. He suggested that it is an extra large format. Will Apple soon opt for a 48mm or maybe even 50mm screen? Apple could also opt for a new screen technology this year, namely micro-LED. Rumors of this have been going around for years, with the Apple Watch as a potential contender.

Apple Watch SE 2022

We think the screen of the Apple Watch SE 2022 will remain virtually unchanged. That means that Apple again opts for 40mm and 44mm. Another option is for Apple to increase the screen to 41mm and 45mm, the same sizes as the current Apple Watch Series 7. But with that, the new Apple Watch SE 2 might mainly get in the way of the Apple Watch Series 8, because the two are too much. similar.

Apple Watch sports version

Thinking back to the rumor about a bigger Apple Watch, we think it fits this sports version perfectly. Since this is mainly intended for outdoor athletes, a large screen fits a lot better. This makes it easier to quickly read the screen while moving, all the way out in the open air.

#4 Features in 2022 Apple Watch models: less innovative than hoped?

In addition to the design and screen, the Apple Watch often revolves around new functions. And especially for new health functions. In recent years there have been several rumors about features that Apple is working on, but the latest rumor says this year will be less spectacular than expected.

Apple Watch Series 8

The Apple Watch Series 8 may get a new health function, such as measuring your body temperature. At least, that's what sources predicted last year. It has been quiet around this topic for a while now and Apple has even postponed some health functions.

Apple can further improve some functions, for example thanks to a better battery. Think of a more advanced sleep function, so that more data is stored during your sleep without having to worry that this will take a big bite out of your battery life.

We also hope that Apple will put in a faster chip. Despite the current model having the newer S7 chip, it has the same performance. Although we don't think the Apple Watch is slow, a newer chip could also provide new possibilities.

Apple Watch SE 2022

The Apple Watch SE 2022 may get some features that are not yet in the current model, but are still exclusive to the standard model (the Apple Watch Series 7). Think of the EKG app or maybe the saturation meter. But we only expect this if Apple is able to further differentiate the Apple Watch Series 8 with other new functions or, for example, a brand new design. A newer chip, for example the S7 chip from last year, seems to us to be the most logical improvement, together with faster charging.

Apple Watch sports version

For the sports version, we expect the same functions as the Apple Watch Series 8. A heart rate sensor, ECG meter, oximeter and warnings for high and low heart rate: we will probably also find all current health functions in this model. This sports version will mainly distinguish itself with the design and not so much in terms of operation. It is therefore questionable whether this will simply be a separate version of the Apple Watch Series 8 or whether it will be presented as a completely different model.

General improvements: our wishes

We do have some suggestions for Apple with improvements for upcoming Apple Watch models:

  • Standard wireless charging: The Apple Watch can still only be charged with the special Apple Watch charger, while Apple once planned differently with the AirPower. We therefore hope every year for support for ordinary Qi chargers, although we are also content with supporting MagSafe.
  • Renewed buttons: Apple could update the buttons on the Apple Watch, in the same way The way we saw it with the iPhone 7 at the time. So no more physically pressing buttons, but a button that simulates the feeling of a real button with a tap of the Taptic Engine.
  • Improved water resistance: Swimming with the Apple Watch is no problem, but the watch is less suitable for extreme water sports or deep sea diving. Apple is also said to be working on new swimming features for the Apple Watch. The aforementioned redesigned buttons would also come in handy for better water resistance.

#5 Release of Apple Watch 2022 models

Apple is likely to announce the new models in September 2022. This corresponds to the announcements of previous years. This will be during the big iPhone 14 event of 2022. Whether the Apple Watch will also be available that same month is still too early to say. Last year the Apple Watch Series 7 took a little longer, but we don't expect the models later than October.

#6 Price Apple Watch 2022 models

In terms of price, we do not expect any major changes. The Apple Watch Series 8 and Apple Watch SE 2022 will replace the Apple Watch Series 7 and Apple Watch SE respectively, so prices will also stay about the same. It is still unclear whether the special sports version of the Apple Watch will receive a different price. The price may be slightly higher if Apple adds a specific feature that you will only find on this model.

These are the expected prices:

  • Apple Watch Series 8: from €429,-
  • Apple Watch SE 2022: from €299,-
  • Apple Watch sports version: from €429 ,-
