We will be hearing a lot more from both Matter and Thread in the coming years. Thread is a connection method for smart home devices, which ensures a reliable connection and a longer range. With Matter, smart home accessories work better together. Today, Netatmo announced that they will support both systems with the new Smart Security Sensor.

The new Netatmo Smart Security Sensor is in primarily a standard door and window sensor. This allows you to see whether a window or door is open or closed. You can then receive a notification when a window is opened and you can connect it with other accessories and use this as a kind of security system for your home. But this sensor also has a built-in motion sensor thanks to infrared. So you can also use the sensor to turn the light on or off.
So this sensor works with Thread and Matter. Thread has been available for a while now and requires a so-called border router to increase the range and network with accessories. An example of such a border router is a HomePod mini or an Apple TV 4K, but other accessories can also take over this role.
It is unknown when the Smart Security Sensor will be available and what the price will be.
Matter will be available in the course of this year. In iOS 15 and other recent software updates, Apple has already added support for Matter. Accessories that work with Matter are therefore suitable for use in the Home app and with Siri. Recently, several companies have announced support for Matter, including Aqara.
