Toyota confirms: solid state batteries by 2025 but on hybrids

Solid state batteries will allow, on paper, electric cars to make an important leap forward, especially on front of autonomy and charging. Several car manufacturers are working in this direction through their partners. Toyota , for example, & egrave; among the manufacturers who are investing in this technology. The Japanese brand is & egrave; also set the goal of launching on the market the first car equipped with solid state batteries by 2025 .

However, last December the manufacturer had made it known that this new generation of batteries would not debut on electric cars but on hybrid models. Now, at CES 2022 in Las Vegas, Gill Pratt , technical and scientific development manager at Toyota, has added some details about this project within an interview with Autoline.

DEVELOPMENT PROCEEDS WITHIN EXPECTED TIMES

Pratt first of all confirmed that development is proceeding according to schedule and reiterated once again that the first Toyota with solid state battery will be; a & # 39; hybrid and not an electric. Model that will come by mid & agrave; of the decade and therefore by 2025. Unfortunately, which will it be? this car to date is not; still given to know. But why & eacute; to focus on hybrids for the debut of this technology? The reasons are essentially economic .

Currently, these new generation accumulators are still very expensive and the cost will not go down; enough by 2025. An electric vehicle with solid state batteries, therefore, would risk having a very high price (in hybrids, the battery pack is small and therefore affects the overall cost less). Furthermore, given the different technology applied to these new accumulators, hybrid cars can be excellent test benches to verify the functioning of the new technology. A way, therefore, to collect important data to make these new batteries evolve.

For Toyota, solid state batteries will only arrive when prices drop sufficiently. This means that to see an electric from the Japanese manufacturer on the road with these new accumulators you will need to & agrave; wait further. You can & ograve; easily think that it is a longer date; close to 2030 and 2025. An important hand in reducing prices will also be given by all the companies that are working on the development of these new batteries.

All that remains is to wait for news; on the development of this technology by Toyota.
